We started this topic on another thread, but a couple of us feel it deserves its own thread.  Let's name some HAC Honorary Doctorate recipients.  Let's discuss whether or not they were "deserved" in the true definition of an Honorary Doctorate.

*As always, one name per post.

Here is a copy of the one posted on the other thread.

Dr. Bob Gray (Longview)

Reply from RAIDER

While I'm not his biggest fan and he has plenty of enemies, he did build a "large" church in Long View.  HAC is all about training preachers how to build works of the same type as FBCH.  If a college gives out Honorary Doctorates to individuals who reflect the purpose of the college I would say Gray was deserving.

Also... it makes a college handbook look more impressive when everyone has "DR" before their name or a list of degrees following.

Sadly, this is ongoing. I know many good guys who got these things. I am not suggesting otherwise. It is just the way the college game is played.

And I believe it extends far beyond the IFB college world.

I believe we have to look at a recipients accomplishments before the Honorary Doctorate was given.  What has happened since had no bearing on it.

Schaap worked at HAC for several years.  I'm not sure of his title at the time.  He was a much used youth speaker in the IFB camp.  Yes, he had some accomplishments.  No, IMO he did not deserve an Honorary Doctorate.

HAC Honorary Doctorate Recipient:

Pastor Jeff Fugate (1997)

Clays Mill Road Baptist Church

HAC Honorary Doctorate Recipients

Pastor Roger Voegtlin (1977)

Fairhaven Baptist Church & College.

In my opinion this one would fall under the same thought pattern as Bob Gray.  He has "built" a solid IFB church of the FBCH style.  I believe he has also started several churches in Kentucky.  A deserving individual.

I bet this is one they would like to take back.  :)  I would classify this one as legit.

Did not know this one.  Definitely valid!

DR RAY BOARDWAY

In '76 or '77, one of HAC's music teachers, Jim Sallee, died in a car accident.  Mr. Boardway took a leave
of absence from NIPSCO, and taught music at HAC and led the chorale for the remainder of the school year.

For that, he was given an honorary doctorate.  Now I liked Mr. Boardway; he was a good husband and father; he also was talented and gifted in the area of music, but I don't think that he was deserving of a doctorate for helping  HAC in their time of need.  (FYI-this was probably 15-20 years before he became FBC's deacon chairman.)

Also, Mr Boardway never went by the title of "DR".

I agree.  He was a great guy.  IMO this was one that should have not been given.
