As told in the other "pictures" thread, I just lost a dog of 15 years a couple days ago. In that vein, tell us a story or two about your dog(s).

I'll go first. This little rat terrier showed up on Thanksgiving 2010 and I didn't want him but ALAYWIFE fed him and the rest is history. We already had an Australian Shepherd pup that a co-worker had given me so that 5 year old ALAYBOY would have him a good pup/dog for starters. Problem was, after several months it became apparent that the boy and the Shepherd weren't exactly compatible. She was rambunctious and too big for his cares. Along came Frisky, a little fella and inside dog that was just ALAYBOY's speed. I couldn't get used to him at first, as he would growl at me when I went to correct him. That's a no-no in my book, but Frisky was obstinate in his rebellious ways, though he knew better than ever nip me. To make matters stranger, for the first 6 months or so, ALAYWIFE would go to pet him and wish him goodnight before bedtime and he would growl, which really brought out the authoritarian protector out in me, but as it turned out, we figured out after a few times of those odd growls that they weren't "get away from me I'm tryin to sleep" growls, but more like a purr of a cat. Weird dog, lol.

I don't want to get too sappy here, but early on in that boy-dog relationship I thanked God regularly that He brought that little mutt in our lives. Though I didn't want that ankle-biter, God knew what ALAYBOY needed more than I realized. Over the years that bond grew stronger and stronger between the boy and the dog. We would go on vacation and ALAYBOY would want to cut the vacation short because he missed that little rat so much. When he went away to college I don't think he missed mom and dad all that much, but he sure showered that canine with affection when he would come home. We will miss Frisky. He made our family better.

Your turn.

I haven’t had the best luck with canine longevity. I’ve owned several dogs in my adult life, none making it to ten years old. I owned a couple dogs at once, but with the cost of vets and dog boarding these days, I’m strictly a one-dog guy nowadays.

I guess my most heartbreaking experience was a perfectly healthy 6 year old boxer who unexpectedly died of a “twisted stomach.” The scientific name for this is gastric dilatation-volvulus. It basically happens when a dog eats a meal too fast, and is fatal within a few hours if not immediately treated. By the time I figured out that she had more than an upset stomach or constipation, it was too late. I live in a semi-rural area, so no 24-hr vets nearby. By the time I got her to a 24 hr vet it was around 6am, and she’d just passed away while I was en route to the animal hospital. The doctor told me that the surgery would have cost me thousands of dollars and that the success rate would have only been about 50%, so it was best it worked out as it did.

Anyway, she was a rescue dog that we got at around nine or ten months old. She hadn’t been abused so much as just really neglected. She was quirky, but a great dog. She had a short life, but hopefully we gave her a good one.

Rest assured Alayman my Major, Smokey, Tiger, Cinnamon, Sam, Ace, Brownie, Dutchess, Shelby, Midnight, Goldie, Shadow, Wilbur, Toby, Rascal and Jake are showing Frisky all the hills, valleys and streams of Heaven. Frisky is a handsome lad. Frisky RIH(Running in Heaven)

BTW it would take a book for me to tell you about all my dogs. Almost all dogs I rescued, in public parks, off the street, etc etc

I don't mind hearing a chapter or two, or even the whole book for that matter, so feel free to share about some of those good dogs you've been blessed to know.

In our younger days, we had no luck in keeping dogs very long. One of the most heartbreaking situations occurred because we live in a rural area, up a hollow, with lots of space to let a dog run. We don't keep our dogs tied up as long as they stay out of the neighbor's business, and keep to our property. Apparently that wasn't good enough, as one of our dogs, Newman (named from a Seinfeld character) apparently must have ticked a neighbor off somehow. I found it convulsing one morning, and to spare you the long gory details, I'm sure it was antifreeze poison that he succumbed to. 😡

i only ever had one dog - when i was very young and still living in east los angeles..... . he was a little dog we called bunjee because he jumped straight up and down like he was on a bunjee cord... ... he did that most often when he was trying to snatch a hostess pie out of my hand which i had to hold high over my head to keep him from getting.....

when my sister took me out of there and brought me to hawaii - bunjee had to be left behind because at that time dogs were not welcome in most places in hawaii... ... landlords and all condos had rules against them..... she was renting a house and could not bring him..... ... plus there was also a 6 month mandatory quarantine for any live animals being brought into hawaii .... and many pets brought here didn;t survive it .... so it would have been cruel to subject him to it.... .... i never saw him again after i collapsed at school and was rushed to the hospital... i never saw home again either.. .. my sister took me straight from the hospital to the airport literally in the middle of the night... and we were on our way here.....

but she didn;t just abandon him.... a family that lived in our neighborhood agreed to take him in and was happy was have him.... when she went back to the house to gather clothes for me they came and picked him up.... . we knew he would be happy as long as he had a hostess pie every now and then.....

but beyond that most of my dog experiences have been bad..... in recent years people in hawaii have gone dog crazy.... even people living in high rise condos and tiny studio apartments are trying to keep dogs in their house... and even big dogs that have no business being kept in an urban concrete environment.....( our building still bans all dogs and all pets other than exotic birds and aquarium fish)....... . ...

twice i was almost run over by people driving cars with a dog in their lap.... . and i have grown so sick and tired of seeing dogs in restaurants and grocery stores...(especially after seeing a dog squat and take a dump in the floor of one) ... so that i now avoid any store or food establishment that allows them inside..... . ...i could say a lot more about that but i will leave it there.... .
