His life is undoubtedly a tragedy. However, I agree with you that those of us so blessed by the grace of God understand that ALL of us, like sheep have gone astray and bought shame and reproach on the cause of Christ. The Apostle Paul called himself 'the chief of sinners." It is God and God alone who will be the final arbiter of His righteousness on judgment day. So, may we strive to be worthy of that crown.
I like the quote of a novelist who died over a hundred years ago, H. Rider Haggard, who said "I am a Christian because I believe that Jesus Christ embodies the mercy of God to people like me, who have lived lives that inevitably have some terrible things in them."
