Well... I stepped way out of my comfort zone today and ate crawdads. The first, and only time until now, I had a crawdad in a Chinese Buffet outside of Aurora, Illinois. It was gray stringy meat that tasted like a muddy river.

So, being that we are in Louisiana during crawdad season, I decided to give it another try... They are very good! You just eat the tail. You can suck juices out of the claw... but I will try that later. I am just starting off!!

I just can't eat anything that looks like bait.  :o

I know. All you do is eat the tail section.
My wife still had me peel hers! :D

I've only tried them at a Chinese buffet, too, and they weren't very good.  I'll have to try them again from a more appropriate place.

I've never had crawdads, I love catfish that's about all I can handle :)

Had them once, did not like them and haven't tried them again!

I like crawdads very much but to me they are much like crab. It is a lot of work to get the meat out when you don't know what you're doing. I like tako poke, sushi, and most seafood but I think calamari is rather tasteless.

One of the hardest things for some of the guys I knew who came from Louisiana to hac, was the lack of seafood in NW Indiana. We have it but to them it was not even close to the same thing. One guy who had not gone home in three years told me he was going home and was going to eat nothing but seafood for a week!

Being from Louisiana and living in Louisiana I can tell you crawfish are delicious. They are good boiled, fried, in stew, gumbo, etoufee, etc.  Now crawfish at a Chinese restaurant is a different story.  I have never had good crawfish at a Chinese restaurant even in Louisiana.

I agree... I had crawfish cornbread... that was good too!

When we arrived here, in Abita Springs, we saw a bunch of mounds. I thought they were snake holes and I was really disturbed to see how many holes there were! The picture below (though not where we are staying) is a good representation of what it is like where we are currently parked. I cannot believe how good the tails taste off these little buggers that live in holes like this!

I'll be sure to post pictures (if I can figure out how to post pics) of our next crawfish boil. :-)  Love those little guys - the leftover tail meat makes excellent crawfish ettouffe , and the leftover potatoes make the best potato salad you've ever eaten! :-)

Cool! Someone suggested that we suck the juice out of their heads. One step at a time for this northern boy!

We were in LA for three weeks (Abita Springs and Hammond). We just left this morning to Vicksburg, MS and are headed to LA once again this weekend.

We are going to the church Duck Dynasty goes to this Sunday.

Yeah, I don't suck the heads, but I do boil then clean to make crawfish bisque.  All the fat is in the head, so it makes a fabulous sauce.

I am jealous of you heading to the duck dynasty church - too cool!

Someone said it takes a long time to eat a crawfish..... like it takes a crab.

I can eat one crawfish... break it apart, suck the head, pinch the tail and pull the meat out..put it in my mouth..about 5 or 6 seconds. I live in New Orleans, so i got a lot of experience, but it dont take long to get fast at it.

We were in NOLA for the Festival. It was a real nice time! In fact, we have been to NOLA three times. The festival is the best time to go!
