Cancelling church

JrChurch said:
Our church only cancels for weather if there is a state of emergency.  We expect people to use their own discretion concerning safe travel.

This would be the reasonable attitude to take.  Some churches say this, and then preach at the people who actually do use their own discretion and stay home.

I remember just a few weeks ago when there was a regular season game to be played in buffalo they found people who were motivated enough to hand shovel the entire football field of 220,000 tons of snow.

Not that cancelling church is wrong but I do have to wonder about what motivates us.

You've got a point there....although the Bills gave game tickets and paid for help.  (In Green Bay, the fans do it for free. There aren't any tickets to give away.)
How is the church going to motivate them???  You can stay at home and have a good time with God.  The church doesn't have a monopoly on Him.  Or...maybe...just maybe...He isn't the real reason they want you to come to church........(yikes!).....

Are you sure about fans doing it for free in GB? I thought they paid 10.00 per hour for people to shovel.

Big churches and paid church staff have kind of put the kabosh on volunteerism.

Well, yesterday was a first with cancellation of morning and evening services.  Deep, heavy overnight snow made roads impassable and the church had no electricity.  Besides using social media, each household was called by deacons to notify and offer help.  I happen to know the youngest deacon loaded up his snow blower and cleared 8 elderly homes.  As soon as we dug out, my husband and son made it a block to an elderly church member's home to check on them (knowing they were without power) and the 82-yr-old man was standing by his snow blower (holding on to his walker) getting ready to start it.  Have to love these retired coal miners.  Takes a lot to slow them down.

That's Bible Christianity.

Some church staff would sit at home until one of the deacons had time to shovel their drive for them.

It's rare round these parts unfortunately.
