BATTLE STATIONS!!!!

I think not going to the movies is a good general rule of thumb. The local cinema is expensive, full of unhealthy food and most movis are not ideal for Christians. That being said we fool ourselves if we think watching the same movie at home on cable or streaming while eating rocky road icecream and potato chips is any better. I notice many preachers still mention the cinema in passing but rarely include cable or streaming. Youtube and Tick Tock seem to be a much bigger issue with young people and younger adults.

I grew up in a church that still held on to this ridiculous “movie theater ban,” but the reality is that by the 90s, pretty much everyone there went to the movies other than the church pastoral staff and a select handful of members with service positions (deacons, Sunday school teachers, etc). Since my dad occasionally rotated as a deacon and my mom occasionally rotated as a Sunday school teacher, the silly ban affected me.

I think most people under 30 would laugh at the thought of going to a movie theater. That’s considered an “old people place.” Preachers should just focus on what people watch, not where they watch it. Young people stream everything nowadays—movies, TV, etc. (There’s a reason theaters are closing all over the country.) I probably go to a theater once per year. It’s too expensive, the food sucks, and they are usually ghost towns filled with a few gray heads.

I've never been much of a movie goer... As I have grown in my faith, I am even less of a movie goer. Don't get me wrong; some decent movies have come out that I have thoroughly enjoyed. They usually carry an edifying message and/or accurately portray historical events.

I digress...

I remember during the height of the anti-rock era preachers getting up and decrying the genre with it being obvious they delved into it and had to have listened to a bunch of it. I remember wondering if it was healthy for them to do so given how evil it was supposed to be. I bought into the anti-rock hysteria for a time and was trying to step away from the genre when I heard a message decrying Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult. For days afterwards, that song resided in my head like a bad ear worm. Edifying, no?

I also recall our church occasionally having a “movie day” where we’d watch a Christian movie in the church auditorium or gymnasium, or when church members would wait for a movie to come out on VHS/DVD, and then watch it at a home. Nothing hypocritical here folks…nothing to see…just keep walking and don’t ask questions! 😬
