I'm glad you brought up Peter. If you look at Matthew 16:22 - 23 you can see Jesus gives Peter perhaps the harshest rebuke of the Bible when he calls him "Satan". This would be a bit harsh had he simply made an innocent mistake and not realized Christ's mission. Peter knew but he had his interests set in in this world rather than the spiritual.

2. At the empty tomb the disciples didn't know the scriptures and didn't understand that their Christ had just died, was buried, and would rise again 3 days later.

They didn't understand the resurrection even walking around inside the empty tomb having just seen their Christ die on the cross and be buried.
