Obviously not a HAC grad.

I liked where he said that the debt would change his preaching.  Spot on.

Did he elaborate at all on how debt would change his preaching?
Sorry, but I don't want to give 20 minutes to listen to a business meeting.  :)

Human nature.  You now have a 15K monthly mortgage you didn't have before.  You need $$$.

If you would take the 20 minutes to listen (just take a little TV time) you'd learn.

I was on staff at a church that built a 4 million dollar "church plant".  Not long afterwards the pastor at a staff meeting wanted more time for us out knocking doors.  Well, how spiritual.  Nope.  We now had higher utility bills, etc.  We need $$$.

So, the debt will make him more manipulative/fleshly in his preaching...to raise money to pay the debt? I'll just take his word fot it...he knows himself better that I do.

And you assume that your anecdotal experience translates into a universal principle.

It has the potential to do that and yes, I do.

I would say that 'debt' is A symptom but poor financial and stewardship principles are the real problem.
Since we're giving anecdotal experiences to prove our points, I was in 2 different churches that had no debt but were constantly in a state of financial crisis.

That's funny!  Of course it didn't affect the pastor.

I have been there.

What?  In a building project you couldn't afford?  Or you've been to Knox's church?

What didn't affect the Pastor?
The lack of debt?  :)

Yes.  He was concerned they couldn't afford to go into debt.

or

the looming financial crisis.

It really makes you wonder about pastors who leave churches because they are not able to pay their own bills.  Talk about a lack of faith.

Many Pastors and churches have terrible financial acumen. They are either ignorant of or choose to ignore Biblical principles of finance. But, I repeat, church debt is not the problem.

I've heard some claim that they can run a church in a manner that would bankrupt a business, their excuse is God will bail them out. Somehow it just doesn't work out and they blame God.
