Pastor Max Mercer, 28, hopes to improve the Whiting community through his work at Whiting Baptist Church, 1547 119th St.
The Whiting resident took the helm of the church last October after graduating in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in pastoral theology from Hyles Anderson College.
?I have always felt that God wanted me to be a pastor. I had originally planned on starting a church of my own, but when I heard that Whiting Baptist Church was without a pastor, I felt this was a perfect opportunity for me,? he said.
In 2009, Mercer became a third-generation bus driver and captain for Hammond Baptist Church, providing transportation services until 2012.
?I had grown up my whole life reaching the people of Whiting, and I felt I needed to stay and carry on what my grandpa and parents had begun,? he said.
While in college, Mercer traveled across the country with evangelist Joe Boyd, holding revivals. ?We would go out visiting every day and try to get visitors to come and therefore breathe some new life into the churches,? he said.
