Our pastor is doing a series on some the teachings of Jesus; specifically where He says , "Ye have heard it said {insert Old Testament passage here}, BUT I say..."

Well today Pastor Jim (filling in for Pastor Tim) was in Matthew 5:27-28 (NKJV); "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery,' But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

I've been dealing with some issues of late, and this sermon really hit home. God was doing some heavy duty work in my heart. And from the looks of those around me, I wasn't the only one He was dealing with.

I like the church Kris and I have been attending, but on more than one occasion I've come away with the sense of having been given a pep talk rather than have been fed the meat of the Word. Today was one of those days when I wanted to get up and walk out right in the middle of the sermon due to what He was showing me.

Praise God for His Word, and the light it shines in the darkness; even the dark places inside our own hearts.

do you mean you wanted to go down the aisle before the invitation was given, or you wanted to leave? I'm not sure I understand.

as to your conviction question: I believe the biblical meaning of conviction means to convince with truth and evidence, so, according to that, I am almost always convinced of a truth when the word of God is preached. It's when the sermon is full of stories that I'm not convinced.

Have you considered what Jesus was trying to communicate here?  You couldn't possibly be righteous before God on your own steam, even if you could follow the law to the letter.

I felt like I wanted to leave. The pastor's preaching was making me uncomfortable; hitting a little too close to home on a couple of points.

I understand that, but still, the sermon was hitting a little too close to a few things that have been going on of late.

It definitely wasn't a "feel good" sermon like you'll find from Joel Osteen. This sermon packed a punch.

Good to hear somebody acknowledge the power of the word through the Spirit.

Thanks for sharing.

I started a thread not long ago about Amnon, Tamar, and Absalom, where David was portrayed as a longsuffering merciful Christ.  The theme "don't presume to take for granted the mercy of God" was a subpoint of the sermon.  That thread came from an incident as you described, where God spoke to my heart and reminded me of how blessed I was to be called His son.

Every Sunday my pastor preaches convicting sermons. Today we had a special speaker from south Florida what a message he gave...You can listen to it online at www.beaconbaptistchurch.org :)

We had a guest preacher this morning, Charles Keen, who is here to give a charge at the dedication of our Mission (Bible-printing) Center.  Many who picked up their kids from junior church told me how great the sermon was and they wished I could have heard it.  I wonder if they meant I needed to hear it?

ah. so that's just a figure of speech. you don't really/never have left just because you realized God was showing you "this means YOU", right?

But I think I can see someone leaving if the messenger wasn't speaking the truth in love. :)

Charles Keen is a very good preacher, both in content and in manner of delivery (able to present the content in a way that keeps people's attention, as well as getting the point across).

Probably that is all they meant.

Eliz553- I enjoy hearing him.  He has been to our church a number of times.  Just sorry he and his wife have to be here in the middle of a bad snow storm.

Was blessed to hear bro Keen at his home church several years ago.

Our Pastor refers to those topics as meddling and he was told by his mother many years ago not to meddle in other peoples business. Real good feel good sermons with an invitation to go to heaven at the end. Only lasts 30 minutes or less and we are at the restaurant.

We must rely on the internet sermons for any meat and potatoes when it comes to getting "convicted". You first have to get caught before you can get convicted !

If that is the case, then how sad for your church.

I was convicted last night for being lazy and playing too many video games.

40 minute driving radius and the same thing everywhere we have been. Great singing and found some good people to fellowship and in house Bible Study with. Many looking for some meat these days.

I don't see the dilemma here? When the church {assembly of believers} meets and when the preaching of the Word occurs conviction is "one" of It's effects.

I am convicted every time I hear the word.  Sometimes I don't pay any attention to that conviction. I know, foolishness.  But I thank God that I don't get any of what someone here called "pep talks" like some of the stuff heard on TBN.

Next time, pay attention when you are at church.

haha  No I was not playing video games during the church service but was convicted during the preaching about playing too many games at home.
