Here is an article on The Ten Most Influential Churches of the Last Century, and we are not on the list.

Bill Hybels and Jerry Falwell both made the list.

Do you suppose the author had never heard of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana?

Not only did FBCH not make the top ten, its not even mentioned.

Oh, the author? Elmer Townes.

Were not interested in what the stinkin' liberals are doing!!  Give us the 10 most influential IFB churches!!  :)

Once we left college, found out that a lot of people had no clue who Dr. Hyles was or FBC! They are big in their own eyes. I look back now and laugh about how books written by staffers at HAC/FBC are called classics.  You drop the name Hyles at my church only a couple will raise an eyebrow and that is only because they know the legalism of Jack Hyles.

Elmer Townes, as in the one that wrote "World's Largest Sunday School" featuring FBC back in the day?

You can tell he has gone liberal in his old age.  :)

Yup. The very same. Seems so ironic.

Yes.  Since I blame him most for what happened to our churches.

In the early 90's Dr. Towns believed that FBC had leveled out in growth.

At the end of my sophomore year at HAC I went to Liberty for my brothers graduation. At a reception he introduced me to Dr. Towns. Dr. Towns told me that I should finish at HAC and then come to Liberty for my seminary. He pulled out a flip notebook and showed me a list of all his graduates who were now pastoring and running over 1000. He was a very impressive man.

Ironically Dr. Towns advised me not to go to Liberty in 1974.  Of course many things changed between 1974 and the early 90's :) In 1974 it was Lynchburg Baptist College.
