While much of what we post about HAC/FBCH seems to be negative, there were people there that truly made a difference.  It may have been a staff or faculty member at the college or church.  It may have been someone who sat in a pew every service at the church.  These are those who were the "real deal".

So, Hacker Nation, who was it that was a blessing to you?  Tell us about it!

Darrell Moore was always encouraged me. Mark Rasmussen was always kind to me.

Just a member at the church but at the time Dick Kennedy was a down to earth friend. We met working the parking lot across the street on the side of the auditorium before the evening service one year. He was in the Fishermen's club & a time or two when our trainees were no shows we went SW together. He had a bunch of kids, lived across the tracks in the apts but would invite my wife & me over after the PM service for popcorn.

The few time I was back in town for a service somehow he'd find me, come up behind me grab in a bear-hug lifting me off the ground & greet me.

Good guy........back in the old days.

Darrell Moore took time to have breakfast with me and be a blessing.
Dr. Jorgenson kept me from making a pretty dumb mistake in life.
Ray Young picked me out of a hundred other bus captains, handed me the key to a  room of a nice hotel and told me to take my wife there and enjoy the evening.
Bro. Piper let me stay at his house for a week before school started on my first year.
Roger Alley, another student always encouraged me.

Jeff Owens taught me leadership, compassion, perseverance, humility, followship, and a thousand other things. Only three other people in my formative years influenced me more than he did.

Hey, Tom, I am but a voice and a vessel.  :)

We sat in the same section as the Nymeyer's when we were young college kids.  I admired the importance they placed on family and I looked up to them.  We didn't parent exactly like them, but they influenced my thought pattern greatly.  Good, faithful people who didn't allow the "system" to usurp their own principles.

I always remember the balcony section where they sat.  I can still see Jim Reed hanging out in that section.  :)

George & Marilyn Godfrey

About 8 years ago, a close friend of mine ran across them in another state. They were in a public place, and there was Bro, Godfrey showing someone how to be saved.

While I know that many that may have been closer to FBCH would disagree with me, Dr. Hyles made a positive difference in my life.  As a 4 year college student I did not witness the negative of which some of you speak.  My parents had established many positive character traits in me.  Dr. Hyles reaffirmed many of these and opened my eyes clearer to many more.

I gained more of a love and concern for those who are less fortunate.  I learned to love and appreciate my home pastor more.  I learned a greater love and respect for my Godly parents.  I learned that doing little things for people often times makes a big difference.  I learned to be grateful for small blessings in my life.  I learned that we should put our all into any task we are given.  I learned that God's work should be done as first class as possible.  I learned to be a better organizer.  I learned that God can use anyone who is willing to surrender to Him.  I learned to show thanks to people who have been a blessing to me.  I learned that no matter how far I have drifted from God I can come back to Him, and even though I may have scars and may have disqualified myself from certain "positions" God will still use me.  I learned that the preaching and teaching of God's Word is extremely important and should be prepared for with that thought in mind.  I learned that laughter is certainly the "best medicine" in many a situation.  I learned that weak minds criticize on a regular basis.  I learned to appreciate those who work many hours at secular jobs throughout the week and show up to church on Sunday needing to hear something from God.

Raider, I agree with you on much of this.  Had I stayed for the four years I was in college and then left, I think I could have said the same.  But, things changed.  I like to think that we were there in the "heyday" of the college.  It went downhill from there, in my opinion.  And looking back on it, the foundation for corruption was being laid back when we were there as students.  It just hadn't had time to marinate yet. IMHO.  Oh dear....I used the word "laid".  And I wouldn't have thought anything of it had I not had JS as my pastor. Sad.

Some one wrote "Grandpa Vaperzan".  Thank you.  I had forgotten about him.  People who were a blessing?  Bob Hooker.  Matt Mullen.  Phil Pins.  Somewhat Jeff Owens.  Jack Hyles (I still have a note he wrote to me in my file).  Daryl Whitehouse.

I'm surprised to see Darrell Moore's name here more than once.  Thankful for Evening College, didn't find him to be a blessing.  I never caught on to Ray Young.  I always felt he was dishonest with the student body.
