The home is the main place for training up children. But because of the erosion of the home churches have one ministry after another to try to combat this. Is it the churches job to try to replace what should be going on in the home? Is it a realistic expectation of the church to try to make up for the lack at home with multiple ministries if it is not going to be reinforced at home?

Ideally no its not the churches place...practically if the church doesn't., who will?

Shouldn't it be the other way around, and bring the hammer down on the root of the problem? Like the parents. Everything rises and falls on leadership, right? Get the parents doing their job. It's their fault.

Who says it's an either/or thing?

Shrug. Just looking for some thoughts. Everything has its place, and when one starts trying to do the job of another it seems like it could create problems.

If the church isn't the place for spiritual instruction, then why do you sit there and listen to sermons?

Once you allow that the exposition of the Word from the pulpit is appropriate in the house of God, you can't consistently claim it is inappropriate if done in a Sunday-school room in an age-appropriate manner. Strictly speaking, neither format is positively commanded in the Bible.

Ephesians 4:11,12 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Every saved person needs to be perfected and edified.  The Lord set up His church with offices and instructions for the work of the ministry.  Parents, children, singles, widows, young and old need to be built up.

Going back and really looking at what I posted, I realize the fallacy of my question and bow to your logic. I guess my real problem is with the lack of training at home, and the results that come from it. As well as the lack of reinforcement at home of what gets taught at church.

That is why it is refreshing to know people who are doing a stellar job of training at home, living a consistent life at work and have a healthy reinforcement at church.

If the parent(s) aren't doing their job (or won't do their job), then yes, it is reasonable for the church to try and help. Someone has to train up the next generation. However, I do agree with you that it should begin, and be primarily in, the home, but with the state of today's family, that sometimes (unfortunately) isn't an option.
