School out here lets out in May, so we're thinking about summer and what to do.
What are some of your plans this summer? Do you have kids and if so, are you going to try to do anything alone with your spouse by making plans for the kids to do something away from home?
Summers here are HOT, so that means planning around extreme heat.
One thing we take advantage of is zoo membership. With seven of us, buying a year long membership that allows us to go in at no cost as often as we like is about the same price as buying tickets for one visit. Since it's only a 15 minute drive, we spend a lot of time there! There's a monkey that seems to have befriended me, so that's pretty sweet.
Since I work for the school, that means no pay during the summer, so we try to plan stuff that is fun but not a ton of money, which can be a challenge with so many of us. We've managed to find some pretty good deals before though! We found a ballet that was affordable, and last year had fun at the arts festival, where I volunteered to help work a food booth and when it got slow, one of my daughters got a chair, sat out front, and played her violin, drawing lots of people over. The restaurant running it was really happy and packed up a ton of food for us to take with us when I was done, which was quite nice and unexpected!
It should be interesting this year. While it's nice to have a break from the classroom, it also means at least a couple kiddos or two at home all the time, so this year we're gonna get smart and try to coordinate some time where all of them are gone at once so we get a break ourselves! We'll be looking into VBS for them (I know one is still young enough, not sure about the next up) and summer camps for the older ones. There are overnight ones for the older kids, and I'm crossing my fingers hoping we can find something similar for the younger ones. I'm pretty hopeful since I think the overnight ones start at her age. Hrm. Guess we'll find out. They have kiddie college out here too, where the college offers lots of different classes like cooking, science, mystery solving, cheer, dance, etc.. for a semi-reasonable cost. The toughest part is the attempt to organize it all for everyone to be able to do what they can and are interested in all at the same time!
