Summer Plans?

School out here lets out in May, so we're thinking about summer and what to do.

What are some of your plans this summer? Do you have kids and if so, are you going to try to do anything alone with your spouse by making plans for the kids to do something away from home?

Summers here are HOT, so that means planning around extreme heat.

One thing we take advantage of is zoo membership. With seven of us, buying a year long membership that allows us to go in at no cost as often as we like is about the same price as buying tickets for one visit. Since it's only a 15 minute drive, we spend a lot of time there! There's a monkey that seems to have befriended me, so that's pretty sweet.

Since I work for the school, that means no pay during the summer, so we try to plan stuff that is fun but not a ton of money, which can be a challenge with so many of us. We've managed to find some pretty good deals before though! We found a ballet that was affordable, and last year had fun at the arts festival, where I volunteered to help work a food booth and when it got slow, one of my daughters got a chair, sat out front, and played her violin, drawing lots of people over. The restaurant running it was really happy and packed up a ton of food for us to take with us when I was done, which was quite nice and unexpected!

It should be interesting this year. While it's nice to have a break from the classroom, it also means at least a couple kiddos or two at home all the time, so this year we're gonna get smart and try to coordinate some time where all of them are gone at once so we get a break ourselves! We'll be looking into VBS for them (I know one is still young enough, not sure about the next up) and summer camps for the older ones. There are overnight ones for the older kids, and I'm crossing my fingers hoping we can find something similar for the younger ones. I'm pretty hopeful since I think the overnight ones start at her age. Hrm. Guess we'll find out. They have kiddie college out here too, where the college offers lots of different classes like cooking, science, mystery solving, cheer, dance, etc.. for a semi-reasonable cost. The toughest part is the attempt to organize it all for everyone to be able to do what they can and are interested in all at the same time!

I love the idea of the zoo membership!  Planning things around the heat takes creativity.  I don't know if your area has any special deals at museums, or planetariums, but that would be indoors.

I miss our homeschool days when we could travel whenever we wanted.  Now we are like everyone else who is limited by school schedules.  We live in the mountains where the weather is fantastic all summer so I try to plan vacations to other areas that are not hot.  We have plenty of nearby outdoor activities to enjoy throughout the summer (whitewater rafting is our favorite). I think this is our year for cancelled vacations.  Already cancelled a week in CA in Feb because of a last-minute missionary coming to stay with us that week.  Cancelled the re-scheduled CA trip for spring break because a kid has to go to Fine Arts competition at BJU that week and just cancelled our June vacation because grand kids are coming for a few months (due to Air Force deployment).  Take away my Disney vacation the end of August and I may cry.

My husband and college son spent 12 days in Kenya in Jan and they went to Catalina Island for son's spring break, plus the kid at home has camps/trips planned all summer.  They stay busy enough, but I have my sweet, elderly mom so I don't mind limiting my travels.

I like the idea of the kiddie college and I empathize with the scheduling from the days when all 5 kids were under the roof.  I hope you can coordinate some camps so you can have a break.  If you can't find something for everyone at the same time, do your younger kids have any friends that you are comfortable with swapping overnight stays?  If you could keep some kids overnight in exchange for having them go to their friend's homes during the time that your older ones are away at camp, you just might have a break.  It would take an effort to coordinate, but doesn't everything with a large family?  :D

Oh, I hope you get your Disney vacation! We're all too familiar with canceled plans around here.

Overnights with single families are out for the two youngest...they have mental health disabilities so we keep our eyes peeled for professionals who have worked with their issues before when it comes to needing a sitter. They do okay separately in group situations, so that's why we're looking into stuff like camps, but even then we have to make sure we trust the people and that they're fully aware and willing to work with them and that it doesn't cause them any legal concerns, as they require 24/7 supervision. That really cuts down on options. I'm still learning myself and it's been almost three years...I get the feeling the learning part never ends.

And yep, even if everything was typical, it takes a lot to coordinate everything, even getting ready for school and with having two bathrooms. LOL  "Mom! MOM! Can I use your bathroom? MOOOOMMMM! She's been in the bathroom for like, forever and it was MY turn and we have it scheduled! MOM! MOM! MOM!" Would you believe that even going on 18, they STILL will talk to me while *I* am in the bathroom?  :o  "Mom, I need this paper signed!" "Mom, are you going to be able to pick me up from practice?" "Mom, I'm hungry! We have no food!" Despite the cupboards being packed. Cracks me up...

HaHa! And people wonder why we look forward to driving the car somewhere by ourselves.  Peace and quiet!

Didn't know about the issues with your younger ones.  Let me know if you find something for them to do.

My summer plans (hopefully) involve volunteering at the greatest summer camp in the world. :)

Camp Anawanna?

We took the ALAYBOY to Myrtle Beach last year and he loved it, so much that when I asked him where he wanted to go this year he said "Myrtle Beach" instantly.  With gas prices being so high, I'm tempted to just take him up to Lake Erie and *tell him* it's Myrtle Beach. :D

Truth is, I don't know what we're going to do yet, as we often fly by the seat of our pants when making vacation plans.  I don't like to drive real far, and he loves Great Wolf water parks, so we might just go a couple of two-hour jaunts down the river and pull some quick weekenders to Cincinnati, taking in a Reds game, Kings Island, Creation Museum, etc.

Helping a church in Wisconsin with their building construction for a couple of weeks. Then traveling again... not sure if we will go West or East. We are leaning towards the East Coast. There is a church in NY that needs help too.

My girls used to enjoy going to Lake Erie. Kinda hard to find a clean part though, don't know how long you've been around there but at one point they had to close it for all the hypodermic needles and other junk washing up and I was told that since I was pregnant, I should stop fishing there and not eat any fish that came out of it.

Did find something for the two youngest...sending them and hubby out of state for a week to visit a relative. Just got the tickets today so that should be fun for them and give us a break here too. Got a sweet 16 to finish planning, which is also happening this summer. It's gonna be interesting. We're covering the back patio in plastic as they'll all be wearing white and throwing paint at each other. It'll be fun to see how the outfits turn out!

Are ALL of you living my past life? ROFL! Lived in Sharon for a while, remember wanting to take a big old bite out of that giant chocolate bunny on display at the Hershey factory!  That was back when they still did tours, although I'm sure they probably don't anymore so nobody will sue them.

Now I remember your bias against my beloved state. :D  Truth is, there really is a marked difference in Ohio when you start getting anywhere near Columbus or points north.

We've been there before, and thought it was clean and presentable, but we stayed west <Port Clinton> of where you were used to tromping around.

There are definitely parts about Ohio that are wonderful. I do have some bias, true, mainly concerning the degree of political corruption, but that's rampant almost anywhere anymore. There are a few people there that do bring back some bad memories and of course some pettiness that just drove me insane, like the way the grass had to be ridiculously short and they'd bust me in a second with warnings if it was a quarter inch over (and they actually made a rule about proper draperies in one city!) but there's also a lot of things about the state that I love. Nothing I've seen compares to the beauty there during the fall season while driving down quiet back roads, the outline of an Amish farmer driving his horse and harvester through the fields as the sun sets, the peace of being snowed in during winter, Grampa's Cheesebarn in Ashland and Sweetie's jumbo chocolates, grocery stores that pack your groceries and load it into your cart. (and of course the French Quarter in Columbus)
Used to love to go sit on the rocks by the lighthouse on Lake Erie, which is probably why half my thyroid is gone now. LOL (Perry Nuclear Plant beside it) Still, that used to be my quiet time and it was nice.
Jet skiing on the lake, out on the boat, all that good stuff. Going to the foothills and just the prettiness of all that.
I would have been willing to give living there another try once upon a time in the not too distant past, but I was born by the ocean and that's where my heart pulls me, so as soon as I get the go ahead, that's where I'll be found, digging my toes in the sand, jumping in the waves, and scaring the tar out of everyone by balancing precariously on break walls just for the thrill of it. (watch me fall next time, not as nimble as I used to be!)

So I admit, there is a lot of good in Ohio. I did go there a few years ago and it really helped remind me of some of the wonderful times things in my life there in the past. I admit I left with a sour taste in my mouth and I still don't like the strong-armed political tactics that seem to go on there, but is anywhere perfect? Nope. Everywhere has its faults. Even the ocean has sharks, right?

Gina, sounds like you found a perfect plan for the 2 younger ones.  Yay!

Alayman, our entire church staff has moved here from your state.  Can't say I blame them  ;D.  I know we would go to the Cincinnati area more often if we could actually get there from here.  ::)  I've only been to the Creation Museum once and I really enjoyed it.  We have Lifetime memberships for supporting them since the planning stages, so we need to take advantage of that perk.

We have kids in CA, NC, GA and FL and they all love coming here in the summer to escape the heat. And coming here in the winter to ski.  And coming here in the fall to enjoy the foliage.  Hey, no wonder I stay home so much.

It will be work for most of the summer. Some plans for a hiking trip in a couple months, and a camping trip around August though.

i do not know about everyone here

i am really enjoying my summer

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it.  I like the longer days, warmer weather and absence of a school routine.

Not much planned this summer other than attending a pastor's conference in OH next week.
