I've long wanted to visit the historic South...to see the places where Jefferson, Washington and Madison lived and worked, for example. And to take in the sights of the Blue Ridge area.

My wife, however, prefers different things. Holidays are for relaxing so there's nothing better than simply taking some time down at the beach reading and sipping a nice cool Budvar shandy.

I appreciate this viewpoint, of course, especially since last year we spent three weeks trekking through the unremitting smog of China, so we're having a week on the South Carolina coast, an area mentioned favourably by many in this forum and its predecessors.

I did consider Myrtle Beach, but to me it looked over-commercial and a bit expensive. I might be wrong about that, but anyway selected Charleston as a base. I wondered if anyone had any ideas of things to do there - is it worth taking some time to go to Myrtle Beach or Savannah, for example? Does anyone know of anything else of interest in the Charleston area?

Also anything to do around the Roanoke, Virginia area would be appreciated.

When my kids were younger, they loved the aquarium in Charleston. Toured the city on a horse-n-wagon seeing the old architecture throughout the city. I visited the USS Yorktown battleship and museum. Though I haven't been there yet, you can tour Mount Sumter. There are several parks.

Myrtle Beach is commercialized but when we go, we go late October, early November. Beach is pretty empty during that time of the year and a few of the hotels have indoor water attractions and pools. Can easily get a room off-peak for under $100 a night during that part of the season.

I went to Savannah once on a business trip. Nice city and went to the park where the Forest Gump bench scenes were filmed. Didn't get to check out the area like I wanted. Seemed to mirror Charleston in the way the town was set up.

Have fun on your trip!

I'm getting too old. Maybe it wasn't the Yorktown I was on. It was on some aircraft carrier in Charleston. Sorry for the misinformation...

LOL!  No, you got the name of the ship correct, you just called it a "battleship" instead of an "aircraft carrier".

Got it. As you can tell, I'm not much of a military buff... :)
