Old question.  But should a Christian feel free to drink alcohol in public?

I have heard many argue that Jesus drank wine and the bible actually approves of wine in moderation, so it is perfectly acceptable to drink it in accordance with Romans 14.  But would that not mean that a Christian should only drink it in the privacy of their own home, or should they go public and not worry what the legalists think?

"Should they?" is the wrong question. Depends on the situation.

May they? Biblically speaking, there's no prohibition. Neither Jewish nor Greek society was teetotalling, and Jesus and the apostles didn't set up Temperance Societies when they planted churches.

Maybe I should have said it differently. Maybe I should have just said, "what is your opinion and/or biblical rationale for drinking or not drinking alcohol in public versus in the privacy of the home?"

It depends.

What kind of alcohol are we talking about?

Anheuser Busch products?  Then no, that nasty.

If other beers, like germany or english, then yes.

Mick is correct that American Adjunct Lagers are a poor style, and that the Anheuser-Busch examples tend to be particularly bad. (Not that A-B can't do good beer if they put their mind to it. I have had good beer by them, but Bud or Busch is not it.)

The American Adjunct Lager style as described by Beer Advocates.com:

"Light bodied, pale, fizzy lagers made popular by the large macro-breweries (large breweries) of America after prohibition. Low bitterness, thin malts, and moderate alcohol. Focus is less on flavor and more on mass-production and consumption, cutting flavor and sometimes costs with adjunct cereal grains, like rice and corn."

Doesn't sound very appealing, does it?

However, one need not resort to imports to get actual good beer. American craft brewers make some of the best beers in the world. Just stay away from the mass-market stuff by the megacorp breweries.

IMIO*, a Christian brings disrepute upon Christianity, not by having a drink while visible to the public eye (which, as noted Jesus did, so that the Pharisees called him a "glutton and a wine-bibber"), but by being an obnoxious drunk or by driving drunk. Don't be a binge drinker, and don't be an alcoholic. Oh, and don't drink Budweiser or Busch, they're awful. Responsible public use of alcohol by Christians is just fine.

(* In My Izzy Opinion  :P )

I try to wait until the sermon is over.

Should? No.

Can? Yes.

In front of those who are weak in the faith? No.

Nothing wrong with totally avoiding it too.

No! Just because the Bible may not have it verse by verse.I haven't seen anything good come a case of beer or a bottle of wine..........
I have tooooooo many personal stories to back up what I'm saying. I would never judge you for drinking either because I'm not God!

I've lived a quiet life on purpose.......... :)

Should Christians drink alcohol?  It depends on their motive and reason for drinking it.  Is it for medicine or for recreational reasons?  IMO
