It seems to me that Jesus, Peter, Paul, and the other men of God in the Bible dressed rather modestly and not in the elaborate clothes of the pharisees.  Should a pastor dress up in such to please his Pharisaical members?

How one dresses for church isn't going to please or displease God. That is, unless you dress in such a way that the other worshipers are looking at you rather than Jesus, in which case I don't expect He'd be happy with that.

Just avoid being an object of distraction, either by dressing up too much or down too much (how much either way depends on the norm for your particular congregation), or by dressing provocatively sexy (which also depends to a large degree on what's normal at your church -- what I wear to church would be scandalously immodest for the Amish, but what they wear would be prudish at mine). Avoid that, and all will be well.

Obviously the Bible isn't specific as to what one should wear in church. I am not a Pharisee in that I don't pretend to be anything at all in the church. HowEVER if I were to go to church, I definitely would dress the best I could (and for me that would include a tie and suit). I don't understand why people want to dress down when going into the House of God. But to each his own.

Would one wear his shirt tail out and a pair of faded blue jeans to a business meeting?

Isn't God just as important?

I went to Perimeter Church last year and a woman had on a haltar top. I also went to Andy Stanley's church and people were in flip flops. I don't mean to infer they were sinners or bad in some way, but I just feel that when going to the house of the Great Creator, one would want to look nice.

But that's just me.

Some people do feel that way. If you came to my church in a suit and tie, you would be welcomed and treated well. But your appearance would be unusual, a mild distraction. I do wear flip-flops to church, at least in warm weather. But it's not unusual at my church, and thus not a distraction.

At some companies, that'd be normal. Not at most to be sure. It all depends on your corporate culture.

In a Quaker Meeting we dress in what we call "Plain" dress, i.e., regular clothes, nothing fancy. Most Quakers don't wear suits and ties to Meeting. Although if I went to a regular church I'd probably dress the way everyone else in the service dressed.

Depends on if the church is planning to have a costume party or not!

Actually, Izdaari, you have a point. I remember when I went to Perimeter Church, I seemed to be the only one dressed in a suit and I can't tell you how many people came up to me and welcomed me, knowing I was a visitor and that was a very large church.

You're right.

:)

Thanks! :-*

Although... the flip-flops I wear to church are not cheap ones. They're brand name, and may cost $50 or more. That's not vanity: since they're my standard all-purpose Summer shoes, they have to have arch support, be well-made and comfortable, etc. Cheap generic flip-flops don't match that description.

50 bucks for flip flops?  Whew, boy do I love my wife even more now.  :)  I'd hate to ask what you pay for real shoes.

LOL! For me, "real shoes" means either running shoes or boots. I don't wear lady's dress shoes ever. I can barely walk at all in high heels without falling.

And "may cost $50 or more" doesn't mean I actually pay that much. That's retail. I look for the sales, and I'm pretty good at it.  8)

Should a pastor dress down to please his Pharisaical members who think dressing down makes them more spiritual then those who dress up?

Nope. A pastor should dress in such a way that people focus on worship and not on how he (or she) is dressed. Ditto for the rest of the congregation. They should be praising God, not comparing clothes.

Wait a minute! Wasn't the the actual point Paul was making when he wrote about dressing modestly?

Really the actual point the OP was making is that we who wear suit and ties are pharisees and those who wear cut-offs and a tee-shirt are spiritual. But that's just me

Actually I think it was more of a take off of TGL's thread condemning those who do not wear suits and ties. Both condemnations are wrong. However you wish to dress for church, do it unto the Lord.

Actually, that is a lie.  The original post was a parody of TGL's stupid Pharisaical post condemning those who don't wear suits and ties in order to please their members.  Don't worry.  I forgive you.
