After the crucifixion of Christ his body was placed in the tomb.  He rose 3 days later.  Where was his soul during these 3 days?

Since Hyles Anderson College wasn't in existence at the time of Jesus' burial, He couldn't have been there.

Many in the early church believed he spent at least part of that time in Hell.

From The Apostle’s Creed:
"I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty…"

Did they believe the "hell" that he descended into to be the fiery hell or the paradise side?

Of course the Scriptures are silent on the details.  What we do know is that He told the thief He would be with him TODAY in Paradise.  But the Scripture also says that the Lord BECAME SIN on the cross.  I have zero problem believing He went to the fire part of Hell to deposit the sin and then "floated" across the great gulf and then led captivity captive.  We'll all find out the details...one day.

It's an interesting topic.

What is the worst part of Hell?  Separation from God.  You mentioned that the Lord "BECAME SIN on the cross".  From noon to three the earth turned dark.  Christ cried, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"  Could it not be possible that our sin was laid on Christ during that time and the Father had to turn His back on His Son?  Thus the earth turned dark as Christ suffered alone for our sins.  Just a thought!

I do not believe he went to "Hell" as we commonly think of it today.  To be sure, he descended to the "belly of the Earth" for 3 days (as Jonah spent 3 days in the belly of the Whale), but I do not believe he was "tormented in the flames."

Keep in mind, "The Wages of Sin is Death,"....not eternal torment in Hell.  Hell was not created to punish sinners.  It was created for "the Devil and his Angels," before the fall of man.  Man got caught in a trap that was not set for him.  Hell is the result of our inability to enter into Heaven, but it is not the penalty for sin.  (Someday we can get into a discussion about eternal torment vs. soul destruction.)

Christ had to die (take our punishment for us) and shed his blood (to be an acceptable sacrifice based upon the OT requirements), but he needed not suffer "Hell."  I would presume to assume that he was in paradise, redeeming the OT saints.  At his resurrection, they also left the Center of the Earth (Hades in Hebrew) and ascended to heaven.  Some even walked around Jerusalem and met with family on the way (don't ask me to explain that...)

Thanks

I also share this thought.  I think it is interesting when we see what Moses and Elijah spoke to Christ about on the Mount of Transfiguration.

Luke 9
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

Of everything they could have spoken to Christ about they chose his coming death.  They knew that Paradise was a temporary holding place and that it would take Christ's substitutionary atonement to make Heaven possible.

Being raised Catholic, They taught that he spent the 3 days in hell.... Rose, and took his seat at the right hand of God.

However I place little into what the Catholics believe, as they were the reason I left and became agnostic before finding the Baptist church. This is a few of their teachings that I disagreed with and argued about....
1. Mary as a holy entity... According to them and "The great assumption" is she did not die, she ascended to heaven, which the Bible never says.
2. The Pope... He is Gods mouth here on earth, again just with the little I know about the Bible God had said (paraphrasing here) No man shall speak for me
3. Praying to Mary... This was a big issue I had, The 10 commandments says not to worship anyone but God, which most prayers of theirs goes through Mary

These were just the big ones for me I have many others that are small and trivial.
