You sweep men away in the sleep of death NIV

You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream ESV

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep KJV

Can you share your views on the translation difference from the NIV?

Someone preached last night at our church on Psalms 90, and at this point they said our life is like a flood wave that quickly washes away, or like a dream that last only a few seconds. In comparison to God, we are so small. This is one way of describing just how small we really are.

Anyway, when I read the NIV today it seems totally different from the KJV, ESV, or many other translations.

Why is this?

Why is this?

Because the NIV is conveying the idea, not translating word-for-word.  Don't really see the need for it here, but the sense is accurate.
