HAMMOND | With an orange jail jumpsuit and leg shackles replacing the suit and tie he wore to a previous hearing, disgraced Pastor Jack Schaap admitted Wednesday to having three sexual encounters with a parish girl beginning when she was 16.

Schaap, 54, formally pleaded guilty in Hammond federal court before U.S. District Court Judge Rudy Lozano, admitting to a charge that could bring 10 or more years in prison.

Schaap, former pastor of Hammond's First Baptist Church, entered the courtroom Wednesday in an orange Porter County Jail jumpsuit and leg irons. Throughout the proceedings, he periodically winked and gave a thumbs up to family members and others gathered in the visitors gallery.

Seriously, this thread is worthless without pictures.

Even just one of those courtroom coloured pencil sketches would suffice.

He's so sad, I can't help feeling a twinge of sympathy.

*burp*

Well, that passed.
It (the report) says Jack Hyles was a founder of First Baptist Church. Unless they just mean the building, this would be an error. FBC is well over 100 years old and was an American Baptist Convention church up until 1959.

He said it was wrong but didn't know it was against the law. Really the pastor and school administrator did not know it was against the law to have sex with a 16 year old.
..he may have spent years spreading his unbelievable garbage to the chronically ignorant at his church,  but no thinking person believes this claim.

Age of consent laws vary by state. I believe it is 16 in the state of Indiana, but not in the other states and, by crossing state lines, he made it a federal issue.

Not saying what he did was right (by any stretch at all), but he really might not have known.

Well we know ignorance of the law is no excuse...and in this case I don't buy it that he made so many preparations ...including having someone drive them and he didn't know. But hey that's me.

Since 16 is legal in Indiana, it's possible he might not have known. But in any case, he's still a sleazebag, a heretic and a lousy preacher. (I've seen his videos; even completely disregarding the content, he's painful to watch. His delivery is like really bad comic overacting, but without the funny.)
