My wife and I were in the Chicago suburbs a couple of years ago and stopped for ice cream at a place called Oberweis Dairy.  It was an actual dairy but had an ice cream shop on the front of it.  You could watch milk being bottled through a large glass window while you ate your ice cream.

Since that time we have found Oberweis Dairy Ice Cream Shops here and there throughout the greater Chicagoland area.  Folks, this is the BEST ice cream (other that homemade) that I have ever eaten.  It has an old time malt shop theme.  They also sell bottled milk, cheese, yogurt, and several other items.  Has anyone else ever heard of this place?

Ask the #oldpaths group.  Sounds right up their alley!  ;)

Do you still live in the area?

I've lived here for nearly 30 years and have only gone to Oberweis once. I am really not an ice cream fan. I always meant to go to Coldstone Creamery, everyone raved about it so much. But it closed before I ever got there.

Jim Oberweis is a politician. His dairy money funds his campaigns.

There is one in Highland across from the Old Country Buffet.  I'm telling you ice cream fans, you have got to try this ice cream!

Next time you find yourself up this way. If you liked Olberweis, you will flip for Fair Oaks Farms.

About 25.00 gets you a complete tour including the birthing barn where there is always a live birth going on.

Every time I hear the name 'Oberweiss' it reminds me of Sound of Music!  FWIW

For the HACkers that worked on Chicago bus routes,... There is a "Margies Candies" ice cream shop at the corner of Western & Armitage. Best shakes I ever had there.

Oberwies Dairy is EXCELLENT. They actually do offer home delivery, their mils is out of this world. It's amazing how much different it tastes without all the stink that big places put in the milk.

I take my daughter there for dates. It is a fascinating place but I'm not a fan of their icecream. My daughter just loves it though.

I was a bus captain 78-80 (89-9) and Western and Armitage was a border.  Only been through Chicago airport...never back to city.  Should put it on the bucket list.

Coldstone Creamery

Once, I was ordering some ice cream there and saw a foot long black hair atop my favorite flavor. I told the girl that was waiting on me and she said "Oh", and plucked the hair from the ice cream and then asked, "One scoop or two" and I declined and left feeling ill.

After you grab your Starbuck's coffee, on the Blvd, you drive past Oberweiss's drive thru window, to exit to Main St.
Seems only fitting to grab some ice cream, since"hey, I'm going that way".

;D

Again, the proximity of Starbucks is a factor.
If I'm out that far South, Fair Oaks is tge lastgood coffee til Lafayette.
And, while you're there, you may as well pick up some cheese, milk, ice cream and butter.
And you may as well watch it be made
And......
