Now that I've read it....

Concerning Music

Students at West Coast Baptist College will be taught the importance of appreciating and growing spiritually through the means of godly music. Students will also be taught that worldly music and Christian rock music are destructive to their maturing as a Christian.

West Coast Baptist College believes in the importance of following the Scriptural admonitions regarding music found in Ephesians 5; therefore, our emphasis revolves around psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

The 200-voice choir of Lancaster Baptist Church, as well as all musical groups and instrumentalists, adhere to conservative music standards, emphasizing a distinct melody and godly music theory. Students will not, however, be taught to have a judgmental spirit of other ministries with slight variations in music style from that which is taught at West Coast Baptist College. They will be taught that a critical and judgmental spirit is as grievous to the Lord as perhaps an unintentional variation in music style by a like-minded fundamental church.

What in the world is an "unintentional variation in music style"?

I grew up with some kids that went there. I knew them before they left and since they have come back and I would have to say that they came back better than they left. So they may just do what they say they do.

Wonder if this is what they had in mind with 'unintentional variation in music style'?

Holy Contradiction, Batman!

What in the world is "godly musical theory"?

So they will not be performing any Alice n' Chains any time soon? What are their proof texts for their reasoning?

Music theory looks at techniques genres, styles and historical periods.
And, I assume the elements of music—rhythm, harmony, melody etc.
And so, they would grade these on their 'godliness'.... :D

According to the site, Ephesians 5...and they determine the merit in songs, hymns and spiritual songs....BUT they do it without a judgmental spirit.... ;)

Nah, we're not going to judge you for listening to music we don't necessarily agree with. It's just going to destroy your soul is all.

As I have said many times, this place is full of double-speak. They want to appear more accepting than they really are. It is just marketing, folks.

I thought a typical X-er school philosophy was just whatever the school's pastor says. Is there a generic homogenous philosophy that would be considered typical?

Bingo, they are whatever the pastor says but most all of the X-er school's pastors have the same central themes of: standards is godliness and complete obedience to whatever the pastor says.

I won't forget hearing a Paul Chappel sermon bashing Saddleback church and the music there, even to the point of falsely claiming the women in the praise group "were dancing in their midriffs". Not true! We had standards there...no midriffs allowed on stage!  LOL

But this at the same time Chappel's music guy (not sure what they are called nowadays in the IFBx churches) would attend the worship conference at Saddleback each year with Paul's knowledge. Go figure.

Perhaps he has matured since then.

Well, that music guy has moved onto greener pastures.

Still I have to wonder what was going on in his head when he recalled his actual experience at Saddleback compared to the "new, revised"  edition from the pulpit.

When Toby comes to our church once (or twice) a year, he tries to talk my husband into sending our son for "just one year of Bible", My son has had Bible for 19 years, and for the past 12 years he has had an awesome Bible teacher! He doesnt want to be a Pastor, Youth leader or a Christian School teachers....so the answer is a big NO!

They get you for one year, and then make you feel guilty if you dont stay for the other three. We arent in the guilty trip anymore!
