We are currently in Oklahoma, visiting the various tribes. The Chickasaw (south-central Oklahoma) have an IMPRESSIVE cultural center in Sulphur, OK.
The next day, we visited their Capitol Building in Tishomingo, OK.
While there, we met a very nice lady who talked to us about the Indian culture (obviously) and we asked her all kinds of questions related to faith, politics and the issues surrounding the political-speak junk related to Indians. Yes, they call themselves Indians and they have schools with Indian mascots.
What struck me the most was their highlight of the Presbyterian faith (primarily) and that they have a large segment of believers. It appears the missionaries to the Indians have done a marvelous work!! While I am sure more must be done, it was great to see how our indigenous communities, originally pagan worshippers, are exposed to the gospel.
We are visiting Cherokee Nation this next week.
