Was not able to be at church this morning so I watched most of Joel Osteen's message. He based it upon Scripture and used three different passages to support his thought for the message.

Very positive in nature.  Saw no problem with it.

Even gave an invitation at the end.

So it was a topical sermon? What was the thought and the scriptures to back up the thought? So it was positive, but was it accurate?

Yes, it was a topical message like I believe he usually does.  His thought was to not let the naysayers bring you down.  Used Saul, Nehemiah and Jesus as his examples.  Did not write the Scripture references down.  As for accurate I am not 100% sure on the answer to that.  I was doing several things while the tv was on and was listening to it in the background.  I did not have any issues with what I heard him say nor did I think it was inaccurate.

I did not see it as much different then the many topical messages I have heard over the years from the IFB preachers I have heard. It is just the IFB's messages tend to be negative on outlook more often then not where his are positive.

LOL, that's the message he got from Saul, Nehemiah, and Jesus?

Ol' Plastic Face is as deep as ever.

In my opinion he is a false teacher. He teaches the health, wealth and prosperity gospel, which is not the gospel at all.  I think it is dangerous to listen to him, since he purports to be a preacher of the Bible.

And yet you, Bobby, teach the false Gospel that Christ didn't die for all.

Hello pot, meet kettle.

I am not a listener to the man personally but after things stated on here I thought I would since I was home.  As for the message he got from Saul, Nehemiah and Jesus, I have no problem with it.  There are many lessons that can be learned and he chose to look at one lesson from that angle.  Nothing wrong with that.

As for him being false teacher, I have not heard enough of him to know or give an opinion on it. He may be.  All I know is I hear from most the IFB preachers I have heard that any preacher who is not a Baptist is a false teacher.  I just say yeah right and move on.

Correct. He may preach from the Bible, but he fails to include the real gospel.

He seems to dwell on the health, wealth and prosperity themes, I agree.  But he included a salvation invitation at the end and he has the other couple times I have heard him.

Is that much different then the IFB preacher who dwells on the, standards and separation themes all the time and include an invitation at the end?

just wondering

No difference, both are denials of the First Commandment.

The Charismatics seem to think the verse says, " These things were written that you may be rich/popular and by being rich/popular may have life in His name."

The legalistic sect of the Baptist seem to think it says, "These things were written that you may have extra-Biblical standards and by having extra-Biblical standards may show that you have more life in His name than others do."

Both are dead wrong, and both are an abomination.

That's gotta be a first.

Did he blink his eyes by any chance?

That's gotta be a first.

I'll say. The few times I've seen the Game Show Host, the only mention the Bible got was during the mantra where everyone holds it over their heads and repeats, "This is my Bible. By the power of Greyskull!" or whatever it is.

Does he ever preach anything that would convict someone of anything? From what I've heard he tries not to be offensive. I know there are times that I walk out of church knowing I've got so much to work on in my life, and not feeling so good about myself. If we feel good about ourselves all the time we might start to believe there is nothing wrong with us and God is soooo privileged to have us as a child. Then pride might creep in.

He is emblematic of the "Theology of Glory" that infects so much of Christianity today, instead of a proper "Theology of the Cross."

Joel is not deep. But he is positive and pleasant, and I don't often hear him say anything that's just plain wrong. If all the preaching you got was his, you'd be spiritually malnourished, but with a good attitude.

My whole church life has been IFB and mostly the x'er variety. They may both be wrong but I will take Osteen's messages over the x'ers. I have seen so much destruction of homes and lives in the x'er churches overall operation.

From the times I have listened/watched him, I'd have to answer the above question with a resounding "NO!!" However, if you're in the need of a good pep talk, then he's your man.

I'll would take a constant good pep talk over the constant extreme negativity of the x'er crowd anytime.  Although I agree it is not how it should be, but if I had to choose between the two, it would the pep talk crowd.
