it;s slowing down some now... .. but if the wind changes and begins coming from the south ..(kona winds)... we will get the infamous vog... volcanic fog... which is sulfer dioxide ... very acrid and at the moment is very thick..... ... ... .we get it in small amounts frequently any time the wind changes to kona winds because the volcano has been erupting in a small way continually for years..... ... .... thankfully for now the tradewinds which come from the north east are blowing steady and the vog cloud is heading to the south west across open ocean........

there is actually an old hotel on the north rim of kilauea called volcano house.... . it;s been there for decades and has never been directly threatned by the eruptions - even though steam vents come up in areas around it...... people who were staying there the night kilauea went off got quite a show....

here is the latest news on what is happening.....

Do people who stay here void their life insurance policies?
the usgs has always considered the spot the hotel sits on as stable ground.... .. i don;t know how they figured that out but i do know that none of the eruptions in the past has threatened the hotel even though there are a few steam vents around it.... ....it;s actually further from the actual eruption point as it seems... .. the caldera is almost 2 miles wide at one point and though the floor of it can turn into molten lava during eruptions the fountains of lava which can be 400 to 500 feet tall at times are always at the far southern end and not close to the hotel.... but clearly visible to it... .. because of the elevation there it;s actually cold around that hotel all times of the year..... and even during volcano activity....

we still plan on staying there some day.... but so far just visiting the area and sitting in the rocking chairs after dinner in the restaurant is all we have done... ... reservations there have to be made far in advance.... .

and today it;s back at it again.. ... the pause in activity turned out to be very short.
.... ..plus now the wind appears to be changing.... . if the trades completely stop
we will be getting the plume of vog blown at us...

kilauea continues to strengthen the lava flow and last night began sending a fountain
of molten rock to almost 1000 feet high.... since then another major vent has opened
that can be seen in the fore ground on the videos... .. it already has a pretty large
spatter cone around it..... ..

i;m not sure how long this partilcular live video will stay up... . it;s good because it

shows multiple images but it;s not a permanent feed like the usgs video above... it
actually bleeds off the usgs cameras but is only allowed to do that for a limited time...

the kona winds are back ... and so is the vog...:cautious:. .... the official air quality report shows it as moderate but acceptable - but adds that persons with respiratory problems could be at risk..... . the primary pollutant - Sulfer Dioxide (SO2) · (PM 2.5 20 μg/m³) .....

you can see it rising from the vents on the floor of the volcano in the live feed video above... . .. that mixes with normal air as it blows out to sea and makes it;s way towards us.... .so by the time it reaches honolulu it;s diluted and not as bad as it is right there by the volcanic rim... . but the acrid smell currently in the air is a far cry from the pleasant smell of plumerias and clean ocean breezes we are used to.... ..

and today the fire-fountain is back in action........ ...... this would be a great time to
be staying at volcano house hotel... .. it;s really cold there at the north edge of the
kilauea crater.... sitting in front of the big fireplace in a rocking chair - under a blanket
and drinking coffee while watching this from several miles away across the crater would
be awesome... .we did that once before just as visitors... but only steam was rising then.....
