I think the NKJV is a good reliable traditional translation and maintains the best Catholic and Anglican readings. It has the High Church Ecclesiastical renderings as Bancroft required and found in the KJV1611.
It is a revision of the English Bible in the most traditional sense and is by no means a new translation.
I have a good friend, Jim Price, who was on the translation committee.

I've seen most episodes of Home Improvement, and I've never seen Tim "The Toolman" Taylor read a Bible of any kind.
 
We do not need to keep updating the Bible, we need to quit "dumbing down" our English. After 30 years, the NKJV is still very understandable. In fact, after 403 years, the KJV is still very understandable. The problem is our reading levels have dropped off the charts in the last 4 decades. 

Among 34 developed countries, the United States ranked 26th in math, 21st in science and 17th in reading...The dismal showing comes despite the United States spending more per student than nearly all other countries. Spending $115,000 annually per student, the United States performed about the same as the Slovak Republic, which spends $53,000 per student.

The problem is that languages change over time thus the necessity for more modern translations.
 
The NT writers did not choose to write in Classical Greek. They wrote in Koine (street-level) Greek.

The idea that modern versions are dumbed down is absurd.

No, the KJV is not very comprehensible to even well educated native English speakers, not unless they're scholars of Early Modern English or were raised with the KJV. Others, including me, are constantly scurrying to reference books or alternative translations to try to make sense of the convoluted grammar and archaic vocabulary, some of which seems familiar but means something entirely different. Personally, I prefer the RSV family of translations, which are at an adult reading level, but are easy for regular people to understand.

Since when did God's children require scientific research? I have practical proof. I understand the KJV. My children understand the KJV. My grandchildren understand the KJV. Who needs science to understand that?

Even the modern translations have words that are difficult to understand. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Personally, I prefer the RSV family of translations, which are at an adult reading level, but are easy for regular people to understand.

I reference the RSV quite often. I use the NKJV predominately because it has the feel of the KJV that I grew up reading.

The fact is, Americans are not getting better at reading, we're getting worse. Call it what you will, but translations that are "easier to understand" are coming out all the time.

Why is this a problem? It was the approach of the NT writers to present the word of God in a very understandable form of their language.

Where does your idea that the language of Scripture is not supposed to be easy to understand?

It's not a problem. The problem is the steady decline of reading comprehension in America. The solution to that is not to come out with a new version of the Bible every year; the solution is to bring the reading levels back up to where they need to be.

Anecdotal evidence does not equal proof. Apparently scientific education is also lacking.
