Baptist iconography or Stalinist propaganda?

Baptist SHRINE. WORSHIP of the MOG.
We are so Catholic.

Smelin, is that you standing there in that photo??

How sweet! :D

I have never been in the loop in terms of k owing behind-the-scenes info. However, it was always my understanding that mural was done as a surprise for the Hyles', painted when they were away on a cruise and it embarrassed Bro. Hyles...as it indeed should have for more than one reason.

I wonder why it stayed up if he was truly embarrassed.

Mrs. Hyles did not care for it at all. One of her last commands as the former First Lady of First Baptist was to have that thing removed.  Bro. Hyles never really said too much about it, but did request a small repair once, and a touch-up before a Pastors' School another time.

eyes is correct.  Embarrased, but what do you do?  These people paid and wanted to do something nice for you.  You don't like it, but to say so and remove it would be to not accept their offering of love.  Bro. Hyles often taught that different people express love differently and you should always be accepting of their offering (Don't take gifts back).

Yeah. They probably forget to include the gift receipt so returning it was going to be a real hassle.

Don't forget the idol of Bro. Hyles that we installed at HAC. We built a special prayer garden that prominently featured the idol.
The bad part is that the first idol didn't look good enough, so we went to a better artist and spent several hundred thousand dollars more just to get it more perfect.

Mrs. Hyles was mortified over how she looked in that idol.

Give me a break!  The statue of Dr. and Mrs. Hyles is not an idol.  No one bows down before it.  No one worships it.  no one sacrifices their children to it.  It is a statue of the founder of HAC.  It is located in a beautiful area as you approach the college.  When you go to a St. Louis Cardinal game and see a statue of Stan Musual do you call it an idol?  When you visit a historical site and see a statue of a president do you call it an idol?

Ummm...I worship the Harry Caray statue at Wrigley and toast it with a Bud whenever I get the chance.

We have one of Bro. Hyles idols at the college? Who is it, Sunday, Moody, maybe Dr. Rice?
