This Christian Olympic track star is being compared to Tim Tebow for her courage to stand against the current cultural pressures to have sex early and often <with someone other than your spouse>.  Her virginal status <and instant celebrity> became known because she tweeted about the difficulty of remaining pure for so long <she's 29>.

Is this newsworthy, or just another case of social networking run amock?

ALAYMAN, you remind me of Jack Schaap for some reason  :o

She's multiracial? I hope Frag doesn't see this.

Well, you did post about it in a public forum, so I guess that's a yes, right?

I think the same thing about virginity rings, purity rings. It's supposed to be nobody's business, but the business of touting will now become "cool" nevermind what the Bible says about discretion and modesty.

I think that whole purity ring stuff was just a response to professing Christian or church teen girls getting pregnant. I remember before all that purity ring business hearing about Christian teen girls getting pregnant probably with boys who weren't Christians or didn't go to church though I'm sure there were exceptions. I didn't know of any teen girl in any of the churches I went to who got pregnant. That purity ring business doesn't happen in Canada though. It usually depends on the parents of the teens. If the parents are against pre-marital sex than if the teens also share that conviction they will not have pre-marital sex as teenagers or even as young adults.

It isn't just Christians touting either their virginity or self-imposed celibacy. Lady Gaga recently decided to become celibate in the past few years. It's really about keeping your name in the news if you are well-known.

Exactly right.  The "cool" factor is part of the motivation to talk about things such as this publicly, but it's also about the inability to establish proper boundaries due to social networking's loss of inhibition.

Good to see you round these parts again.

As to the question of whether it's anyone else's business, IMO once they announce it publicly it becomes everyone else's business.

Riiiight. She makes a public statement about her lack of a sex life, and she's uninhibited.

Gabriel should have slapped Mary when she announced her virginity. It's none of our business!

This discussion makes me think back to the things my mother (now in heaven for almost 12 years) lived by and taught. She would have been absolutely HORRIFIED by this type of public discussion. Some things should just be private and personal.

As for the "purity" ring thing, I am now embarrassed to admit that, when our church's youth group pushed this, ceremony and all, I went along with it for our daughters. Spent money that I truly couldn't afford at that time to buy the rings. Wish I hadn't been that gullible. (Don't misunderstand; it is the public thing I regret).

And the world makes fun of Christians for it. I know from experience that it's better to keep it to yourself. Guys know I'm not a player and they respect me for it - they never ask me about my past "experience".

I think I agree with Ransom here. IMO, if someone is virgin and proud of it, good for them! I'm glad they are proud of it and are discussing the issue. Maybe someone who looks up to them with take their example, even though they put a big target on themselves!

It seems like I've not yet lost my ability to kill a thread by simply posting on it. I thought maybe that was a FFF thing. :-X

Maybe if they'd have had Facebook in Palestine you'd have encouraged that she share what her favorite position was too.  Just because somebody is ostentatious enough to break appropriate boundaries of discretion does not mean that we ought to encourage it.  Oh, one more thing.  Jerry Springer and Reality TV doesn't accurately portray reality, nor should it be held up as a model for means of communication between civil adults.

I underlined the parts that seem to be causing confusion.

Speaking of positions, Alayman, you are way over the top with this weak response to Ransom on this one.

The Gabriel comment was perfect!

LAMER hypocritized:

Oh brother.

You started a thread about her virginity on a public forum, ostensibly to ask whether her virginity was any of our business.

Now you're accusing me of wanting to know too much about her sex life?

Apparently, you are the one obsessed with a stranger's sexual habits. Typical fundy voyeur. Stupid hypocrite.

Get off it. Moron.

Pffft. I've talked to "worldly guys" before who have known my stance on purity, who have admitted to me that they wish they had waited. Oh, look, we've got anecdotal evidence vs anecdotal evidence. Wonder who wins?
