I enjoy professional sports.  I really enjoy the "big three" sports - baseball, basketball, and football.  I also find myself watching some soccer, golf, tennis, and hockey and a couple of others.  I often listen to interviews of athletes.

Here is the topic for this thread.  What professional sport has the most intelligent athletes?  Which professional sport has the least intelligent athletes?  Why is it so?

I am especially interested in the "big three" but the topic is open to all sports.

Google athletes wonderlic scores. That should be what you are looking for.

That just gives some NFL info.  I am looking for a comparison of different sports.

My information is from nothing but listening to interviews of athletes.  I would rate the overall level of intelligence of the big three as follows (from highest to lowest):

Baseball
Basketball
Football

Was thinking about Baseball at the top! That's for true, not just me being loyal.

"Live your life so that even when you are disloyal you are loyal"

*Would be a good idea for you to write that in the front of your Bible.

Baseball  belongs first.

Football, depends on the position.

Basketball, maybe they only sound smarter than Footballers because they have had fewer concussions.

I would agree.  If you hear an interview with a QB most of them sound fairly intelligent.  A lot of special team players probably have trouble spelling their names.

Xactly.

Isn't it amazing that many times the less intelligent the athletes are the more popular their sport.

After watching last nights game between the Packers and Seahawks and seeing all the stupid penalties, my intelligence level opinion of the NFL has dropped about 3 levels.  :)

It is difficult for the average guy to talk with most professional athletes to assess their intelligence. It is just hard to talk with celebrities. However, it is fairly easy to talk to professional bull riders. Now, as a whole, most of them are a couple bricks short of a load.

I've worked with and known a fair number of pro athletes.

Professional baseball players are not only the dumbest professional athletes; they are among the dumbest human beings on the planet. Most of them are signed at 17, start playing Minor League ball at 18, and are then trapped in the good ol' boys world of baseball until they are in their late 30s. The average baseball player is a 34-year old middle reliever worth $14 million who has the emotional maturity and intellectual curiosity of a 17 year old. And that's the Americans. The average Dominican player is in an academy at 14 and playing professionally by 16. So, they are the same but younger emotionally and intellectually.

Baseball players make the most money per year and have the longest careers.

The average pro football player is smarter than the average person on the street. That doesn't necessarily mean that they make the best decisions in their personal lives (Hell, Ray Rice!), but they are pretty bright. They've all had to pretend to be a college student for at least three years. And they've all been forcefed ridiculously detailed scouting reports, playbooks, and game plans since they were 14 year old freshmen. Most of them - unlike baseball players - have read a book in their lives.

Basketball and hockey players are in the middle. The difference is that hockey players are Canadian, which makes them the nicest people in sports. Seriously, if you meet a pro hockey player, you will like a pro hockey player. Unless you meet a Russian. At which point you will hate a pro hockey player.
