At a birthday party given for him by the church in his latter years a former secretary was introduced. She was one of the FBC secretary's at the time in 1960 when the church voted whether to retain Jack Hyles as pastor. They had her tell the story. She said that as the vote neared, the people who wanted to get rid of him somehow hid church records of addresses so that supporters of Jack Hyles would not be there to vote. She told how she and 1 other secretary got on the phone and called all the new converts who had joined the church as a result of Bro. Hyles soul-winning. She said that a good number of them showed up on the Wednesday night and voted for Bro. Hyles thereby tipping the vote in his favor.
So in the spirit of what if...
What would have been the result had Jack Hyles not received the 75% vote he asked for to stay as pastor?
Which way would the church have gone doctrinally?
Would Jack Hyles have returned to Texas or gone to the Sword of the Lord full time?
Here's one: (this one's far out) That vote was called for by Jack Hyles. And it seems that he did not have assurance that he would carry it. Is it plausible to think he called for the vote hoping he would lose so he could go back to Texas and not look like a quitter?
What would have happened if he had lost the vote?
