What are your thoughts?

Person claiming to be pastor leaves waiter note:

Two things. First, the handwriting looks like a woman's penmanship but I could be wrong. Though the pastor might have been a part of the party, it is unlikely the pastor wrote the actual note. Second, food wait staff make LESS than minimum wage in many cases. My wife has served in the food industry part-time for a few years now and the wait staff makes $3.85 per hour plus tips. This is at an ELEGANT dining facility. So when dining out, please tip the wait staff above the usual. In general, they are not paid their worth, IMHO.

It makes no sense whatsoever.  I wouldn't even know where to start.

Great example of why Christians are often viewed by the world as jerks.  Restaurant staff hate Sundays - worst tippers of all is the church crowd.  So much for Mat 5:41.

The alleged pastor sounds like a cad.

That being said, and no offense intended, but people who go into the food services (waiters and such) know what they're entering into when they sign onto the job.

My son worked as a waiter while he was in college and told me basically the same thing.  He hated working Sunday afternoons and said the after-church crowd were the stingiest customers of the week.  Quite a witness, ain't it?

A total embarrassment.  If a believer did write such a thing, I hope they are not really a pastor teaching others to so poorly demonstrate grace and gratitude.

I have made it a habit to ALWAYS give a tip that exceeds the required gratuity regardless of the level of service I receive.  I am aware of the fact that people may have more important issues going on in their lives than filling my glass.  I know it has to be tough to wait table while you would rather be with your child or spouse who is in the hospital but you can't afford to miss work.  It is possible that your mind might wonder a little and my need for an unending river of Pepsi could be eclipsed by personal issues.  I have heard the arguments for leaving your problems home but as we would say when I was in the army, "that looks good on paper but it doesn't translate to the ground."

For those who say they should be satisfied with their pay, I think we should remember that when a person doesn't have a job they sometimes are forced to take whatever job is available.  I would think that Christians would be more than happy to be a help to others in such a small way especially when we contemplate God's generosity towards us.

Sadly, many think that giving to their church fulfills their requirement for being generous.

Personally, I'd drop a note in her offering plate that said "I gave my 10% to the waitress at Applebees".

I do believe its embarrassing but the waitress shouldn't have shared it like she did. I also object to a mandatory gratuity. I generally give close to 20 percent, it just depends on the cost of the meal. Many times when the waiting staff knows they are going to get the mandatory 18 percent..... they don't care how they treat you.

Many years ago, I shared dinner with my in-laws and children at local restaurant. We had a party of 7 and the mandatory 18 percent started at parties of 8. My wife had just had my youngest son. Which would have been the 8th but he was still an infant just drinking "milk". The waitress did a HORRIBLE job and she even counted my infant son as the 8th member of the party. When I saw the bill, I paid it. I even paid the 18 percent, but I let the manager know I thought what she had done was "uncalled for". Sometimes I think 18 percent is just fine. Sometimes.... its entirely too much. Either way, what I give to God has nothing to do with it. :)

I always tip a minimum of 20%, no matter how horrid the service.  Most likely, I'll tip substantially more.  Why?  Three reasons.

1.  Because I'm a widow, I am usually alone.  Right there, the wait staff is expecting a smaller tip, based upon my smaller bill.  But, because I have two daughters in the hospitality field, I am cognizant of what a table top means to their income.  The majority of their income comes from the tip.  I hate to penalize my server by my small bill, even though they visit my table just as often as any other.

2.  God has been generous in His provision of my resources.  I can afford to be generous, and, frankly, I can't afford not to!  I think of it as "do not tempt the Lord thy God".  Just today, I was craving some minestrone soup.  It was the lunch hour.  The restaurant was crowded.  Table for one.  With my drink and side, the bill came to $8.50.  I left $15.  I can only imagine my server's pleasant surprise when she discovered her expected $2 (or less) tip was quite a bit more.

3.  It grieves me greatly that Christians have such a poor reputation in the hospitality field.  We should be the most generous tippers, the most forgiving customers when the order doesn't come out just right or the wait staff is having an off day.  If we are going to present ourselves to the world as set apart, let's give them something to admire, not something to sneer at.  Let's not hurt the cause of Christ!
