History of the Sword

Look at that!

Before my parents moved me to Hammond when I was 7, I lived in New York. We attended an IFB church there (Ron Comfort was from here as well, but he has quite a few years on me). The pastor's name is on the SOTL subscription renewal list!

So, Jimmy Fallon renewed his subscription? And Shirley Jones of The Partridge Family? Bill Buckner, the former Major League baseball player?

In February 1980, John R. Rice and his wife and kids came to Central Baptist in Pomona for a Ladies Jubilee.  They asked for a volunteer to take photo's and I was selected.  So here is my little part in the Sword.  It was published in the March 7, 1980 issue.  Sorry for the poor reproduction.  For my work, Dr. Rice's assistant, Curtis Hutson, let me choose two books.  One was the Bible Stories book that we wore out reading to our kids and the other was Hutson's book, Building and Battling, which I still have.  He signed that one.  Good times.

BTW, Dr. Rice was a real ham and loved to have his photo taken.  As he was known to do, he would ask ladies that wanted a baby to stand and he would pray for them.  This time he asked ALL the ladies to stand (He didn't tell them why they were standing) and he proceeded to pray that God would give all those standing a baby.  Some women actually screamed and sat right down!  They feared his power in prayer!  It was a hoot!
