In 1994, Hillary Clinton's legal $100,000 gain on futures was treated as a major scandal.

Today, Mitt Romney has $100,000,000 in his IRA - where gains are not taxed and which is limited to $6,000 deposits a year.

Someone wanna explain this?
Someone wanna explain the selective outrage of the wingnutters and teabatters?

http://www.seeingtheforest.com/archives/2012/07/romneybainaccou.htm

Today things are different. Compare the magnitude of Hillary's $100,000 profit to the recent disclosure of as much as $100,000,000 -- one hundred million dollars -- turning up in Mitt Romney's IRA which is a personal retirement investment vehicle that is limited to a few thousand in contributions each year. (Remember, the gains made in an IRA are not taxed.) Romney is already retired, and the one completed tax return he has disclosed shows that he currently has an income of approx. $450,000 per week.

So how did $100 million end up an an IRA that is limited to deposits of a maximum $6,000 a year (after you reach a certain age)? How many reporters has each major news organization assigned to find out why he has up to $100 million in an IRA?

Compare Hillary's $100,000 profit to the disclosure that Mitt Romney has a Swiss bank account. A candidate for President of the United States has a Swiss bank account? (And a Caymans bank account? And others?) Why? What is the explanation? How many reporters has each major news organization assigned to find out?

Compare it to the disclosure that Mitt Romney owns a secret company in Bermuda, which was transferred to his wife the day before he had to disclose it, or what it is or does. How many reporters has each major news organization assigned to find out why he has a secret company in Bermuda, and what that company does, how much it pays in taxes and how much money it holds, and why it was transferred to his wife the day before he took office as Governor?

Romney is a super rich guy. I don't think that needs to be defended. And if the American people think working at Bain Capital for most of his life is a bad thing, they won't elect him president. But he does need to release the tax returns to be able to put all this away and change the subject.

Personally, I am not outraged, indeed hardly ruffled at all, about Hillary's or Mitt's personal finances. But I'll be outraged if Mitt doesn't have better policies to offer than Obama's.

You are not concerned that an IRS tax-sheltered account which has a maximum contribution of $6,000 per year somehow - someway - has a balance of $100 million?

No alarm bells go off in your head over that?

Well, I'd like to hear the explanation, but my main concern is getting someone who can do the job well.

Do you believe that Romney is that "someone"?

He's far from my first choice, but I think he's more probably that someone than the guy in the office now is.

I agree! But just as with Obama, a historic first is all well and good, but if it isn't the right person with the right policies, it's going to be a problem. Condi, si. Hillary, no.

It might have something to do with the President being Commander in Chief. If Hillary were to run again and win in 2016 would she be a good Commander in Chief or would she even make America defenseless? Besides Israel, America is probably the most hated nation in the world and it needs someone who will make a good Commander in Chief.

As I said, Condi, si, Hillary, no. Condi would be a good CIC.

I do believe that Rice would make the best political choice for VP. I doubt she will even accept the offer... BUT it would be her only chance at being President. She will never get the parties nomination by being pro-abortion. I do think she is very capable. She would be the only women currently on political circles I believe could be a good President.

There are lots of legal ways to multiply the funds in your IRA way beyond the $6,000 per year contribution limit.  For example, you can instruct the IRA custodian to put the money into real estate.  Do that at the right time and you can easily increase the existing funds in your IRA several-fold.  There are different types of IRAs.  You can put money in a different type of IRA and then roll it over into your normal IRA.  You can take money from other employee benefits funds and roll them over into an IRA, up to $65,000 per fund per year, I think.  A smart investor with tons of money could rack up a huge IRA fairly easily.  Most of us can't do it because we have normal salaries, etc.

I think Romney should share his tax returns the same way Obama shared his birth certificate.  Mock up a fake tax return and post a layered PDF picture of it on the Internet.  Then, when anyone claims it is forged, mock them by calling them "Taxers" and ignore them.

Or Romney could share his tax returns the same way Obama is sharing his college transcripts.

I agree completely.

I will add that Romney should release his tax returns from when he was 18 to 25 years old and then challenge Obama to do the same.

Right, Condi probably wouldn't take it. She's adamant about not wanting to be a politician. But there are other very capable women in politics, governors and senators, some of whom may be presidential material. Hillary is certainly experienced and able enough, but she has the wrong ideas.
