My neighborhood throws a big block party tonight. We do it every Halloween. It's an extremely safe neighborhood and the kids still go Trick or Treating door to door with their costumes on. I will see princesses, pirates and all sorts of garb when the sun goes down this evening. I may even put on my Texas Pete outfit (yes, the hot sauce guy) complete with red face paint.
It takes me back to when I was a kid in a VERY middle class neighborhood, when trick or treating was common to everyone. We didn't worry about poison, molesters, kidnappers and the like. I loved it. I always think on Halloween night what a shame it is that it costs so much today for kids to enjoy what I did as a child for nothing, really.
I thought this morning about 48 years ago, when I was a freshman at HAC. I loved Dave Hyles and thought there wasn't a sharper guy on the planet. He hosted a haunted house in the youth center that year -- the old Catholic church down the street. I helped with it. I had never been a part of anything like it. It was full of live actors, ghouls and goblins, chainsaws, strobe lights and even live snakes and rats behind glass. I had never been a part of anything like it and thought it was great! When the guy wasn't thinking about the next girl he would seduce, he had skills. That's such a shame and such a waste.
How do you feel about Halloween? Personally, I see nothing wrong with kids dressing up like cowboys and indians, holding their little bags and buckets and yelling "trick or treat!". I did it every year as a child and it didn't hurt me.
