For Memorial Day

we will be at the punchbowl military cemetery of the pacific on the morning this memorial day.... . they have a special service there every year on both memorial day and veterans day.... and i have been going to them ever since i became a part of this family.... ..it lasts about 2 to 3 hours and always involves a few speaches.... recognition of surviving veterans of specific wars.... prayers.... and they always have a missing man formation flyover.... used to be F-15s but in recent years it;s been F-22s... . they also have a 21 gun salute which can be done with anything from rifles to howitzers depending on who is in office and what they approve.....
and then on that evening we always attend the lantern floating ceremony at ala moana beach..... it;s a commemorative thing where people send floating lanterns out to sea in honor of loved ones they have lost recently... . when i first started going to it there was less than a few hundred people attending.... but it became a lot more popular during the iraq and afghan wars..... now there are several thousand attending.... and just as many lanterns too.....
it;s always a full day for us.... but a very rewarding one.....
