Was anyone else a little freaked out when Pastor Wilkerson was preaching last night and told the story of when he was a boy and his dad wanted to convince him how bad beer was? Made him stomp on a can and yell, "No, no, no! Beer bad! Bad beer!" Did his Dad go to the Coystal Mattie Hyles school of child rearing? Just weird to me when you hear the same story from different lips...

Yes I laughed out loud. I think his dad got that from Bro. Hyles.
Bro. Hyles had been telling that story all his life.
I rolled on the floor when he said pee pee.
My grown children look at me and rolled their eyes.
My grand kids started buzzing amongst themselves.
Great grand kids were in the nursery and probably didn't hear it.

My Pastor was John Wilkerson's youth Pastor, He said his father was very strict but a good Godly man.

He again surprised me when he mentioned the "Not 100% Loyal" George Godfrey.  He gave a funny illustration
about GG teaching in one of his classes in this past Wednesday's sermon, May 1st.

He hasn't been mentioned in a good way from the pulpit in 20 years.  My how things are changing.

Don't think the new guy is, was bamboozled by the old man.
Everyone's eyes are now open.

G.G., in my eyes, was one of the most abused persons in the whole JH saga. I spoke with him at length in the mid 90's and he was gentle, humble, sincere and I believe genuinely concerned about FBCH and JH in a godly way, even though he was considered anathema to them.

His daughter, Denise, was our beloved pianist, and I missed her gifts, when she was severed from our body.

GG's wife, Marilyn, was the FBC pianist and HAC's organist for 18 years.  (By the way, Mrs. G is far more talented and gifted at the organ than Mrs. Colsten.  Her twin brother also is a phenomenal organist.  In fact, he was the organist for a time at Highland Park in Chattanooga and was the organist at Lee Roberson's funeral.  Lots of musical talent in that family.)  Where did GG's daughter, Denise, serve as pianist?

Denise is now fighting leukemia.  Here is her Caring Bridge page:

I worked for Bro. Godfrey for four years, took piano lessons from Mrs. Godfrey, spent time soul winning with her and in their home.  Both of them had a part in our wedding twenty-six years ago.

My daughters took piano lessons from Mrs. Godfrey.

I didn't know that Denise was the pianist or even played the piano.  The things we learn.

Mrs. Godfrey actually gave her senior music recital at Tennessee Temple on the organ instead of the piano.  She told me many (most) students took piano as their proficiency so she chose organ.  She also played the organ for our wedding and Dr. G had a message part in the ceremony.  I took a semester of organ lessons with her while at HAC too.

She could literally dance on the footboard while playing the organ.  I loved sitting in the balcony at HAC and watching her feet go.  I agree with you on her expertise surpassing....

I hope that these posts on George Godfrey mean what I think they mean. Deceit was a deeply-integrated, deeply-rooted, officially-sanctioned, widely-practiced policy at both FBCH and HAC. If Pastor Wilkerson is trying to end that policy, he has a lot of work ahead of him. But if he succeeds, he might stop the steady string of scandals that keep coming out of those two organizations.

I was in Walmart the other day and I kept hearing this phone going off, irritating noisy thing, someone had it on speaker pretty loud and I turned around and it was George Godfrey.  Hadn't seen him in years.  He was picking out fruit while listening to whoever left him a message.  People around him thought it was irritating, too.
