I just read Shelby Foote's 3 volume Civil War about Appomattox Courthouse. They said that the moment that Grant and Lee stepped outside of the house, the officers who were in attendance started grabbing everything in sight and throwing money at the man who owned the home. They basically took everything, and it seems that they took a little girl's doll. I had never heard about the doll, but everything else. They even said that the tree where Lee sat when he wrote out his acceptance of Surrender was cut down and cut up in little pieces for souvenirs. That's what the lady giving us the tour said happened.
