And some Yankee was about to steal a little girl's doll that would not be returned to the family for the better part of a century.
That's what the lady giving us the tour said happened.
I just read Shelby Foote's 3 volume Civil War about Appomattox Courthouse. They said that the moment that Grant and Lee stepped outside of the house, the officers who were in attendance started grabbing everything in sight and throwing money at the man who owned the home. They basically took everything, and it seems that they took a little girl's doll. I had never heard about the doll, but everything else. They even said that the tree where Lee sat when he wrote out his acceptance of Surrender was cut down and cut up in little pieces for souvenirs.
And the man who owned the house had moved there because it seemed a location where he could avoid the affects of the war.
