I am away from my computer and have an irritatingly small keyboard on my phone, so I will answer later... For now, what did Paul mean by calling people "weak"?

Who are those guys?  Let me guess, they are IFBx Pastors somewhere.

I don't think 1 Corinthians 8 and Romans 14 are really that difficult.  I'm sure everyone here has known someone or about someone who was saved out of a life of alcoholism or gambling or some other binding sin.  Why would a mature Christian who may have no problem with something of that nature flaunt their liberty for the sake of proving they are strong?  You may be able to drink alcoholic beverages with a clear conscience or engage in other activities that many can't!  Does that mean the liberty you have should be exercised with an "in your face" attitude?  If one gives warnings about the dangers of strong drink as found in numerous verses of scripture does that make him a legalist?

I think John MacArthur was on the right track in his blog on "Beer, Bohemianism, and True Christian Liberty."  There are some who will not allow others not to engage in some things without accusing them of legalism.  It works both ways.  And while wine is not the only doubtful thing that may defile the conscience of a believer, it is one of the doubtful things according to Paul, at least to some Christians.  The IFB crowd is wrong by condemning the liberty many have but the other side of the coin is many like the YRR crowd who will not allow others the liberty to not partake in certain activities.  They are no different than the extreme Independent Baptists.  "Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." (Romans 14:5)

The injunctions handed down by the IFBrs practically define the "weak" person as everyone in their congregation. They say, "Don't drink because of the weaker brother. Don't go to movies because of the weaker brother." Whenever the term "weak" is used, it is used in the idea of do not offend another brother.

This has taken a clear, biblical concept and watered it down. They erect walls of man-made rules and regulations to make sure that no one is offended at all. So, with these sweeping set of rules, everyone is expected to conform to a certain assumed behavior.

The weak are defined, biblically, as ...

"weak in faith" Romans 14:1
"weak in conscience" 1 Cor 8:7

Note certain things about these believers...
1) They are recent converts. In Corinth, when Paul wrote his letter to them, the OLDEST believer would have been saved for only 5 years.
2) They were expected to have grown into "strong" believers by then. 1Corinthians 3:1
3) A conscience needs to be biblical educated. The weak were still participating in the pagan festivals which involved prostitution and excessive drunkenness. They did not develop a proper conscience yet.

So, when making application to the "weak" in our midst today, be careful you don't erect a man-made set of rules on the basis that some people might get offended.
