This touches on the differences:  https://spiritualsoundingboard.com/2014/05/26/which-attorney-david-gibbs-leads-the-lawsuit-of-lourdes-torres-manteufel-vs-douglas-phillips-the-father-or-the-son/

Hey, it's family.  The "divide" is that they have their own firms.

Hey, it's family.  The "divide" is that they have their own firms.

Here's a quote from the article that puts the whole thing in perspective.

"It turns out that the son is not very much like his father. The professional paths of the two Gibbs attorneys diverged when the son could not endorse his father?s old-school theology with its patriarchal philosophy.

Embarrassingly to David, his father has stood with many child abusers in the Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) world over the years rather than publicly renouncing their sin. David?s father is of that old-school philosophy that tends to cover-up and hide as opposed to being transparent, open, and honest. That is why David?s father meets with Bill Gothard?s board as they try to cover-up and ignore Dr. Gothard?s immoral activities. In stark contrast, David Gibbs III is suing Doug Phillips on behalf of the woman he victimized, Lourdes Torres-Manteufel.

Attorney Gibbs III disagrees with many of the positions, decisions, and recommendations that his father and Christian Law Association support as they spend donated church money to protect and cover-up the moral failings of sinful leaders. Attorney Gibbs III supports and promotes child protection and full ministry transparency and accountability. In David?s opinion, CLA and his father have been on the wrong side of these issues for a number of years. That is one of the many reasons why David Gibbs III cannot endorse and work alongside his aging father in ministry."

One is far better off using Gibbs III in my opinion.

To my knowledge, David Gibbs did not help Jack's Schaap in his trial. However, he did help the church in decisions after his firing.

Also, I think David Gibbs helped the church when they were sued by Tom Kimmel's investors recently.

Righto..  Met Kimmel at our church in Bama.  Thankfully he didn't solicit his garbagola to me back then.

It's been many moons ago now but when I was a pastor I asked for a  yearly financial statement from Gibbs Sr's. organization . We received no response. I knew what church he had been a member of at the time, I called and talked to the pastor who was a well-known IFB and asked him if he received the financial statement from the Gibbs organization. He told me that his church no longer supported them and they moved somewhere else because they had asked for a yearly financial statement , and it was not provided.

We dropped our missions support and gave it to another missionary who was accountable.

Are there some examples of Gibbs standing with child abusers?

Didn't you know that being a "legal missionary" is exempt from being accountable according to Hezekiah 2:12, "Thou shalt not question a lawyer's actions".

I never did buy into this "legal missionary" bit.

I know a man who moved to Florida to work with the CLA.  He didn't last 6 months.  Basically, he said the internal politics drove him out.

You can start with these.  Real live suspects appear in each.

Even though I never supported Ballinger myself, Prophet would disagree vehemently.

I believe this divide reflects the generational divide between the old guard and the 'new' IFB's.

I can't imagine a mentality that would allow me to justify letting a convicted child molester continue working with children in between his conviction and his sentence.

I'm quite old-school, but I think Gibbs III is more correct; covering up sin to "not hurt the cause of Christ" is not only unscriptural, it also has the worldly philosophy that it's only bad if one is caught.  I would say that, whether found out or not, those who do such things have ALREADY "hurt the cause of Christ".
