Anybody have any crazy baptism stories?

I've mentioned plenty of times before about how Hyles sent for City Baptist kids to come over during Pastors' School to get baptized so I won't go into that right now.

Anyway, I always looked forward to someone with a big afro coming forward. Every time they got baptized, the hair went from poof to flat and always brought a smattering of laughter from the crowd.

My husband has a common black person's name. And at least once a month someone with his name would get baptized. The next day he would get a lot of pats on the back from fellow college students about getting saved!!

Back in the 70's, the Chicago Bulls had a 7'2" center named Artis Gilmore.  Artis' kid brother came to FBC and made a profession of faith on a Sunday evening.  This brother was 6'8"---Bro Hyles asked him.  This was at a time when Bro Hyles still baptized on Sunday evenings and in the baptistery, this kid towered over everyone in the tank.  I think Bro Hyles really enjoyed baptizing this convert! Smellin, I do remember that Gilmore's brother had an afro which made him appear even taller than he was.

I believe his name was Orrin. Not sure that is the correct spelling. I do remember when that happened.

FYI, last summer I took my boys on a Hall of Fame tour having hit Springfield, MA, Cooperstown, NY and Canton, OH over a 4 day road trip. Great time. In the Basketball Hall of Fame (Springfield), Artis Gilmore's fur coat is on display! :)

I remember a when a very large woman was baptized and the entire choir also was re-baptized!

We brought a 99year old lady from our Nursing Home, to be baptized.
She came back down from the dressing room in a bag.

Wow, that must have been traumatic for all involved. Did someone then have to explain to the nursing home and the deceased's family why it *seemed* like such a good idea to send her up to get baptized?  :o

Her family thanked us, believe it or not.  She had been asking them to let her get baptized for several years.  We were at that Home, in South Holland, for 12 years, so we met most of the families of the longer term residents.

No, they were glad "Mom died happy".

That could have turned out a lot worse! Glad to hear it wasn't a negative experience.

At least Roy Moffitt did not dip her under and then start telling one of his stories before he brought her back up. They take quite a while.
