Since we have been discussing the craziest sermons, it made me think that there must have been some crazy invitations also.

So let's hear it.........

Randy Taylor..............need I say more?

Was attending a church (husband was asst. Pastor), the Pastor was a HUGE supporter of all things HAC/Hyles but had never been to college and was just a good old country boy from KY.  He had a special speaker local man that was attending Bob Grays College (Texas) . Dont remember what the message was about but he was preaching a "hard" message, for the invitation he kept pushing and pushing for people to come forward. My parents (in their late 70's-early 80's were visiting. And they were the ONLY two standing in the pew!!! He kept going on and on with the invitation until my parents finally came forward hand in hand.  I had never attending an invitation like that and would never do it again!!! Did not appreciate my parents getting embarrassed like that. My dad was very hard of hearing, and probably could not understand the guy because he was yellow so loud with white foam coming from the side of his mouth!!

I already posted this on another thread, but JS had an invitation where he asked us to come forward to the altar as a sign of support for him and his agenda.  Some of us left standing in the pew felt a little weird.  Especially seeings we were staff members. Ha!  We just didn't think that was a good reason for going to the altar.  We weren't rebellious.  And we weren't saying that we DON'T support you.  We just didn't think that was a valid reason to go to the altar.

This was the first true sign to me that things were going off the tracks.  I could explain the things that were said in prior sermons that were askew as rabbit trails that were left as dead ends or teachings that were left incomplete but when this sermon was preached I was not in service but traveling back home from out of state watching/listening on the internet while driving.  I could not believe what I was hearing.  The following day emails of the first of many to come were sent to him, to some staff and a few deacons and my prayers began in earnest for his repentance or removal.

It was wicked as hell itself to usurp an invitation, to deal with what the Holy Spirit had prompted in your heart between you and your God, to become a idolatrous loyalty vow to a self appointed "Joshua".  antichrist had come and set up an abomination in the hearts.

When was this sermon? Timeline wise, I mean.

Those of us on the FFF would hear clips of Schaap's sermons.  We would read what he wrote in his books.  The longer he was pastor the crazier and more bizarre it got.  We wondered how in the world the staff could sit there and listen to it.  We were amazed that people continued to sit in the pews week after week.  It still doesn't make sense to me.

Yes, I know Dr. Hyles came up with something off the wall every now and then, but it was not on a consistent basis.  Schaap's preaching was way out there.

Yah, he learned from the best and was just extending the legacy.

When JS candidated, he preached a sermon about how in heaven we would taste the Word of God.  Our senses would be limitless.  I have no idea how biblically correct it was (remember...I went to HAC...I don't know much about the Bible)...but it was pretty off the wall.  I guess he let us know right away that he was a little "off".

from Ps 34:8  O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

But you want to believe in people.  You want to have trust and trust those in leadership, that they have done their due diligence and in that, a little slack here, a little slack there, an abundance of love to cover a multitude of sins.  May we teach the next generation the dangers.

The FBC Teen Revivals were a hoot. A few years after I graduated, ran across a fellow HBer (Randy - not his real name) and he related this story to me.

One message the speaker kept the invitation going. There were two guys who hadn't come forward yet, Randy and his friend. There were about 3 stanzas and they still hadn't gone forward. Finally they decided to put a stop for it and went forward. Randy then told the speaker he was under conviction because he stole a bike, which he hadn't. The speaker asked him to confess it before the group which he did.

I don't recall the meeting but I wouldn't be surprised if that actually happened. :)

I don't think it would have mattered what JS preached that day.  The people were going to vote him in regardless.  I voted for him.  I looked at him like an extension of Bro. Hyles.  I never actually prayed about it.  (Shame on me.)

Tides, what did you think of that sermon?  I didn't really know WHAT to think, but I assumed he was smarter and wiser than me, so he must be right.  Maybe he was.  I just remember the sermon because I had never heard that before.

It was an interesting take but no more.  We do not have the capacity to really understand what life in heaven will be like so I don't entertain it much more than what we do know.  I know I will not be bored because I find God absolutely astonishing by just taking time to observe the brilliance of His creation.

FYI: I did not vote for JS.  I abstained from voting.  I told him that to his face.  I did give him the benefit of the doubt.

For  me FBC has never been about a man.  It has always been about the people who I dearly love.
