Crucifixes, lines of scripture and other religious iconography have long been subjects for tattoo artists, even as some traditions have frowned on the practice.

But now the faithful looking to get inked can do so with a side of sermon. The Bridge church in Flint, Mich., has opened a tattoo parlor inside its doors, part of its mission to offer a nonconventional approach to worship for community members.

Be relevant or go home.

I guess having a Starbuck's and/or a full service bookstore just off the main auditorium isn't enough to draw them in anymore.

What's next, message parlors?

I know sometimes I poke fun at IFB and IFBx churches, but I'll give them credit for not engaging in some of the crap that today's modern / emergent churches engage in.

mEssage parlors?  Like places where you facebook and tweet???

:D

Seriously, when the centrality of the cross is brushed to the side and treated as a distraction, anything novel will do.

Yeah, them too. I guess then they'd be internet cafes. (I'm gonna blame my new glasses on that boo-boo. Having trouble getting used to my new bifocals; they're throwing me off a little right now LOL)

Sad but true.

Thanks for taking my teasing in the light-hearted spirit it was intended.  You're always cool like dat.

Mmm, no I don't think tattoo parlors in church are a good idea. For one thing, good tattoo artists are expensive, and of course you wouldn't want to offer inferior skin art, that wouldn't represent the church properly. So, if people spend their money on expensive tats, they'll have less to give to the church.  :P

lol, your libertarianism knows no bounds. ;)

Heh.  ;)

I think if a church is big enough (and this probably only applies to megachurches), having a coffee shop and/or bookstore could be a good idea. But if so, the church should make sure to get a cut of the earnings. But, seriously, I don't see having a tattoo parlor as being a good idea no matter how big the church is.

Good way to answer the pot-stirring dolt. (Just responding in kind to Alayman).

Altough I think that a tattoo parlor is not in any way something that should be part of a church, much less a "way to get them in."

In my thinking, they only way we shold get them in is to invite them, and then make sure that we are in a church where they will hear somethiing worth hearing.  And show them genuine love of Christ.

The church in question prolly qualifies as a baby mega church (@ 1000 in attendance), so they undoubtedly are driven by typical marketing demographics to reach people.  The problem I have, as a general observation, is those that think that methods are things that draw God's people, will usually justify ANY pragmatic idea to get numbers.  IFBx is no different in that respect.

Passive-aggressive much?

I hate to say it, BUT...

I seriously believe that we as a Church may need persecution to stop all this nonsense. There is so much stupid crap going on today in the name of "Christianity" it's crazy.

Top, you're right about the persecution. If that really happened the positive thinking crowd would probably fall apart.

Is that a place where evanjellies go to get their ears tickled?  I hear Joel Osteen's got one that services thousands weekly.

From the article
"Rev. Steve Bentley founded The Bridge in 2008 for "people who have never felt comfortable at a traditional house of worship,"

I wonder how long it's been since he's been in a traditional house of worship or how many he has been to - they are not all the same?
Does he include houses of worship where they preach Jesus and love as well as the rest of the Bible but not legalism or extremism?

That, IMHO, is what a church should be.

Don't know about Bentley's, not familiar with it.
