Chrysler has carefully phrased this from the beginning. Romney never said that Chrysler was moving their production of Jeeps to China. He said they are going to build Jeeps in China. EVERYONE CALLED HIM A LIAR. It might even be the reason that Obama ended winning Ohio.

Now we know He was exactly right. That is exactly what they are going to do. Even now they are saying the same thing. They are going to "build" Jeep's in China. Not move production. He (Marchionne) even says now that he will build Jeep "Patriots" somewhere else besides the US.

I don't believe for one minute that they will build Jeep's in China and not export them. They say they'll be exclusively for the China market. Its not going to happen. If the China market does not respond..... they will export the vehicles. It will happen. What a bunch of morons.

I like the new RAM trucks but I can't stand that moron Marchionne. He even bragged about paying back the loans and the government still holds a large stake in the new Chrysler.... How about buying out our stake before you start bragging about paying someone back...

Actually, they began building Jeeps in China in 1984. American Motors set up the joint venture and it was transferred to Chrysler when they bought Jeep in 1987. They produced Jeep Cherokees for the Chinese market for years. I'm not sure of their current production status, but this isn't a new thing for Jeep.

I believe its a new venture to build Jeep Patriots. If you read the article carefully.... it looks to me as if they are going to build Patriots and export them.

Jeeps are currently built in Belvidere, Illinois, United States. So much for not moving production.

They will be built for sale in China and exported around the region. Ford has a plant in Southeast Asia that exports more Ford Rangers to the Middle East than any other vehicle from anywhere else. It is a Ford crew cab Ranger with a 4 banger diesel under the hood. I highly doubt Jeep vehicles built in China will every find their way into the US / North America market, although I very well could be wrong. It would not be a first for me!!

I wonder why they would build Patriots in China and not import them into the US?

Diesel vehicles really haven't caught on in the US. Not like in Europe.  In many other countries, Diesel fuel is cheaper than gas. It use to be that Diesel was cheaper to buy than in gas in the US. That's not the case anymore and probably never will be again. I've seen Diesel 50 cent more expense per gallon than gas. Getting a couple more miles to the gallon doesn't warrant changing.

Are they planning on selling the Patriot in China? Chevy and Ford are all over the world to supply regional demands for their vehicles.

The point is, Jeep produced Cherokees in China for several years while they also built them in the US. The fact that they are going to build a different model there doesn't mean that Chinese production is a new thing for Jeep. Will they import those vehicles to the US? Maybe, but their history doesn't support that idea. However, with FIAT as their parent company, that may change. So the real answer is, no one knows apart from the executives at FIAT/Jeep. However, given the fact that most automotive manufacturers who sell in the North American market now produce those cars here, it wouldn't seem to be a prudent move on FIAT's part to move production off-shore.

The only problem with Jeeps built in China is they use up too much gas.  After you drive them, an hour later you want to drive them again.
