I've been gone for a while, but I just blogged on a subject that my family and I are currently going through. Looking for a good church is a difficult process! Hopefully this blog post helps you! http://tinyurl.com/bpa2jpb

Essentially, the blog post presents 1 Thessalonians 1 as the basis for choosing a church. Of course, we could look at more passages, but for the sake of an article, I chose to limit it to this one passage.

From this passage, I find at least two truths:
Friendliness Cannot be Manufactured. Look for a Genuinely Friendly Church.

Also make sure they know what they believe........God's Word..

Are they reaching souls for Christ..or is it a social fellowship...

The singing and preaching should be reaching the heart of the people...feeding the spirit

Finding a good church is easier than ever now with the internet. Just go to a church's site and listen online to some sermons and you can at least get a flavor sample of the preaching. Then schedule an interview with the pastor or elders, Most pastors/elders would be more than happy to meet with you. I would recommend 3 or 4 visits before deciding if you might want to go there at all, of course you see something totally out of wack, then run for the hills!!!

Yes, it's easy to get a flavor of the preaching and doctrine.

That's not usually the problem, anymore.  There's a guy at work who really believes the same way I do, 99% of the time.  I asked if his church is the same, and he said yes.  I checked out the web site and it sure seems so.  I've been planning to visit for a few weeks now, but I've had a lot of work and health distractions.  What remains to be seen is how they handle visitors.  In other words, what are the people like?  I actually visited the church back in 2005 and I honestly don't recall why I never made a second visit.

It can be hard finding a Church - but the hardest thing to deal with is yourself. Many times we want our Church custom-made for our likes and dislikes. I find the best Churches have pastors that are approachable, hearts that are full of love and forgiveness, and people who will make mistakes and sin (not cover them up with spiritual makeup).

Visit some Churches, ask for their written doctrine, invite the pastor out for coffee and become friends ... don't join until you and only you want to.

Well put Tarheel...

I have worked off recommendations from friends who have biblical training (not on this board) to go to their church because their preacher was very good and a great teacher. I am often disappointed. It makes me feel sick to think that these friends are not willing to be honest about what they are hearing.

If people would just understand that the substance people need is biblical substance.

FSSL, listen to our pastor online beaconbaptistchurch.org ...tell me what you think :)

Sherryh... please do not do that to me! I did not listen yet. But, I will listen. Just don't expect me to comment. I don't want to take any risk in offending you!

FSSL, not a problem.............you would still be my friend :)

I think my church is genuinely friendly and biblically sound.

Excellent!

But it is very not fundamentalist.

Well, duh!

Given the first statement, the second is superfluous.

I guess I just like to repetitively and redundantly say the same thing over and over again.  :-*
