We took ALAYBOY to <North> Myrtle Beach last year and it apparently made an impression.  He wants to go back to the beach.  We're considering someplace a little less travelled, like the Outer Banks (Avon, Salvo, Duck, etc).  He had a friend to play with last year, but it will be just him and the old-fogeys this year, so we wonder if an out-of-the-way place will hold his 6-year old attention for that length of time at a place that is less entertainment friendly and more secluded to the beach activities.  We thought about visiting Nags Head for the "city life", and touring Ocracoke for its placid quaintness, but don't want to have him get bored with a vacation of merely adult activities.  Your opinions of the area, attractions, impressions, etc?

For a beach vacation (non-fishing) I would choose Holden's Beach, one of the highest ranked family-friendly beaches in the southeast.  In Brunswick county it is near both Wilmington, NC,  and North Myrtle, very pleasant for families, and relatively cheap as beach vacations go.

Outer Banks is very nice, too.  Attracts more of the surfer/fishing crowd.  Some really interesting areas around there as well.  If your trip is later in the summer the likelihood of weather-related vacation interruptions is exponentially increased on the outer banks.

Enjoy.

And there's a good church I know of in that area too.  ;)

If I come your way rather than going to the outer Banks I'll try to do a better job of meetin' up with you bro.

We would most likely do the early June timeframe, so hurricane season won't/shouldn't affect us.

Thanks for the general info and advice.

I have been to Holden Beach before and can recommend it. It's a quiet place, and certainly so compared to Myrtle Beach. (One family member did not like it for that reason.) If you do want to go off somewhere with a lot of people, though, it isn't too terribly far from Myrtle Beach.

For the Outer Banks, Okracoke is hard to beat. Since the only way there is by boat (ferry), it's really quiet. There are miles of beach and a few shops and restaurants that have good food. Rentals are very reasonable too. Our kids, now in their 20's, still name it first if we ask where everyone would like to go. Take or rent some bicycles and have one of the most relaxing times you'll find on the coast.

Mrs Tarheel and I are in the belly of the beast (Myrtle Beach) right now.
It's nice here now, not crowded, but enjoyable.

You should check out the Oak Island, Caswell Beach area.
It has some things for the kids nearby, but has the small coastal town feel.

You're only a bit over an hour away.  Come on up and take a look around.

I was compelled to pick a topic for a "persuasive speech" in Speech class many years ago.  The topic I chose was Ocracoke Island.  It seemed like a magical place as I read about its untamed terrain.  If we go to the Outer Banks, I'll probably stay on the main OBX, but will take a day to go to Ocracoke.

I had been checking out Oak Island and Caswell online just this morning.  Thanks for the tip.

As a sidenote, do you preachers ever actually do anything besides go on conferences, sabbaticals, and vacations?

;)

Since we only work on Sundays, we have to do something to fill our free time. :)
We're here due to the generosity of a friend, staying in his house.
Mrs Tarheel has chronic health problems and I'm here making the sacrifice for her benefit.

Well, gee, ya sure do know how to make a fella feel like the heel that he is.

Hope all went well and that she got some relief for her body and mind.  Blessings on you and the Missus.

Check your PMs.

I was just kidding, as you know.
We're having a great time and will head home tomorrow, Lord willing.

PM received and answered.

Yeah, I figured as much, and always appreciate your form of humor, but it still made me think two things.  1) I sometimes speak so as to put my foot in my mouth, 2) I hate how this ol' life takes its toll on our bodies/persons.
