Andy Stanley’s poison pill for the doctrine of scripture

He's absolutely right. The foundation of our faith is Jesus.

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:10-11, ESV)

Scripture is one method in which God uses to reveal that foundation to us. I don't put my faith in Scripture. I put my faith in Jesus.

Jesus basically said this when He told those of His time. "If you believe not the writings of Moses, in whom you trust, then how shall you believe my words."

I will say that the Scriptures are more than just written words. They are living. They are eternal. They exist beyond what you think of translation and canonization.

I also know that, regardless of what I think of translation and canonization, a Bible didn't hang on a cross to pay my ransom debt and atone for my sins. Jesus is the foundation of my faith; anything else is idolatry.

The quote from Stanley is an overstatement. I am always curious why people want to be edgy in coming up with the latest doctrinal fad.

Rsc2a, here is an interesting correlation. What do you think of this?

David believed the word of God and found it to be trustworthy. The word of God can be the object of our affection and must be. Why do we love it? Because it has been tested and has a purifying effect on believers. Hence, Avery's fav verse that he abuses:

Psalm 119:140
Thy word is very pure:
therefore thy servant loveth it.

This does not mean that we worship the revelation of God. We can and must love it and trust the truths in it (including the Old Testament).

I would say that we love the word because it points us to Jesus. Thus, the reason it has a purifying effect on believers. Why do I love reading Scripture (apart from the innate literary value) so much? Because Scripture is one of the places I can see Jesus. It's the same reason I love attending Spirit-filled churches, working alongside neighbors to help another, and discussing the truths of God.

So Andy Stanley basically says that 2 Timothy 3:16 is wrong or does he ignore Paul's epistles and only listens to Jesus? So Genesis telling me about Adam and Eve isn't convincing enough? The Jews had to wait centuries or until Jesus came before they could really trust Genesis as fact? Really?

Rsc2a...Is that what David meant when he wrote it?

Most bible doubters could care less what David meant.

Most bible doubters scoff at Bible believers who desire to understand what the Bible means. Since I care, thank you for not clumping me in with the bible doubters.

I was referring to Rsc2a,

Now we know why he won't say homosexuality is a sin - remember that whole thing with the gay couple? Because Jesus didn't specifically say so.

I don't think 2 Timothy says that Scripture is the foundation of our faith. I know that 2 Timothy doesn't say that Scripture is the foundation of our faith. Neither do any of the other writings of Paul. He's pretty clear. Jesus is the foundation of our faith.

Jesus explicitly? No. But I believe that David meant that he delights in Scripture because it is a reflection of God/God's character and it revealed God's will for him. (Ps 40:8 ). It was an incomplete picture that Jesus fully revealed.

I don't disagree with you. My response had nothing to do with the OP but what was said in the article I read.
