A strange new policy at FBC -- honesty!?

Today, twice, the word "honesty" came up while Pastor Wilkerson was addressing the congregation of FBC. We recently had an unfortunate death of a member, and Pastor Wilkerson came right out and said what had happened and said he believed in being honest in telling us things. He admitted there are more questions than answers in this type of situation (suicide) but that obviously prayers and sensitivity are called for.

Then later, he informed us he and his family saved all year and are taking a modest vacation this week.

In each case, he said he was told not to tell us the truth. He said, "They told me, you can't tell them what happened" and "You can't tell them about your vacation ahead of time".  He said he believed in being honest.

Made me wonder who was behind the scenes, advising him to not tell us the truth?  Sure appreciate someone who treats us with truth and honesty.

He comes from a great family, I would expect nothing but honesty from him.  Good for him.

I am liking Bro. John more and more.

WOW.  Not that he is taking a vacation or telling the church of a suicide, but that he is publicly putting people in their place (without naming them of course).

I'm sure its not the staff.  It would have to be someone who is a deacon.  Sounds devilish to me.

Welcome to the wonderful world of having a genuine pastor.

There are many of us who have been at FBC since the 70's who are sick to death of the lies and the coverups that have been standard practice during that time.
Yes it is music to my ears to hear of honesty and not MOG worship.

Folks, here´s the problem. Lying is a deeply-rooted, integral part of FBCH and HAC. Jack Schaap never corrected the lies that were told about Dave Hyles´victims, nor did he make any attempt to correct the falsified student records at HAC. There is no way that Schaap would have been selected by the pulpit committee if he did not support lying as an official church policy. With the worst testimony of any college in the US, HAC still covers up sin in an attempt to protect their testimony.

Another thought:

Many pastors will have other pastors try telling them what to do, or how to pastor, especially when moving to a new position.  When beginning a new ministry, I have had many people tell me how things won't work or how to do certain things.  Many pastors will tell their people something like "People have told me, but I..."  which sounds like what JW was doing.  So, maybe teh source was from without the church family.

Also, this is a technique used to defer criticism from the action to the unknown other that wanted to treat the membership with disrespect.  So, the membership is upset with the unknown other and does not consider the actual words spoken.

It was a man who was about to go out on the mission field.  His last name was Choi.  I believe he was going back to his home church.  Very sad from what I understand.

I find it funny that you should say what you did, and yet still say Dr Evans is one of the best! He is one of the best cover-upers

I really hope the era of doublespeak is over. I remember, the only way we members could ever know the church finances were in trouble was if JS got up at offertory time and made a 15-minute speech about what great givers we were! That speech would be followed by cutbacks or layoffs, and I would scratch my little head...."If we're such great givers and there is NO problem, as was emphasized by the 15-minute speech...then why do we need these cutbacks / layoffs?" So you would begin to doubt the veracity of anything announced...wondering, "Is this just more doublespeak?"

And then couple that with the tendency toward hyperbole, and it became almost hilarious. You would sit there and listen to someone being introduced...or some event being hyped...and the person / event is becoming the Most Amazing Person / Thing The World Has Ever Known....and you wonder, "Is this doublespeak? Or just hyperbole?"

Honestly, it can be VERY confusing!  ;)

It is both, which are part of the feelgood-ism, greatest-ism, biggest-ism which has been ongoing fair at FBCH for the last 50 years. JH was pleasing his dad building the biggest church in the world. I think he really believed it.

Well, that is good. Let's hope that the pressure from those people in the background does not get to him, and he continues on this course.
